Starter motor won't be an issue when OEMs integrate hybrid systems in to take care of low speed start / stop environments....I'd be suprised if the likes of Lexus were not doing it already with their semi-hybrids.

I'd be more worried about the starter motor/battery on the diesels, also curious as to what all the engine on/off cycles would for the DPF/DEF equipment.

You talking temperature wise on the exhaust treatment stuff?
Its all measured and tested and its all in check. Part of my previous job was on the measurement of Diesel vehicle components over a lifetime. We basically drive like a nutter through the city, country and autobahns subjecting the car to 'realistic' driving cycles under extreme loads. This extreme measurement is then extrapolated over 300,000km and checked theoretically and on the test bench, effectively covering anyone who drives the car in a normal manner.
Anyone thinking such a system goes unchecked and has a negative effect on longevity over the lifetime of the car is kidding themselves. The largest concern for us was additional pressure fluctuations you get from a stop start system. Instead of going from around 300bar at idle to 1800bar and beyond, you now go form 0 to 1800 but even this is designed for and kept in check. I cant comment on the starter or battery though, but Im sure its all covered the same.
Have to say, in all the cars I drove, I never felt the system was an annoyance and anyone who does find it intrusive is being very picky. By the time your foot is on the clutch or off the brake, the car has started again, I fail to see the problem?

With the diesel CX5, to me it seemed like it didn't even need to crank for a second to fire up again.

Mazda seem to be having battery issues with their iStop system. They don't fail per say, but they don't hold the charge required for the iStop to work. So the system disables itself until the dealer replaces the battery.

All the hate for stop start systems is much like all the hate for fly by wire throttles when they first came out.

Lots of "I don't like them because... well just because"

I don't hate the system, just concerned about the long term durability of the components. I'm actually currently researching if it's just a different software coding on my Citroen that I can enable via Lexia, and the relevant switch.
