Pretty cool little thing but rare as fuk these days, just disappeared overnight.

Cheap turbo, suspension, braking upgrades... would teach you a lot about vehicle modification without breaking the bank (and actually be interesting and quick).

If i could find one not completely fucked i'd own it in a heartbeat.... absolute hoot to drive.

Early RX7's are a right giggle. Not sure on price.

2nd gen rx7s are probably just as cheap as 1st gens now.

For resale you could go AE86, but it will end up costing a fair bit more than your budget. $5k will get you a fucked complete ADM or a JDM sans engine. Go the JDM because it has a diff and brakes that are not made of cheese. Fix up the bodywork while you're saving for an engine. They are a nice car to drive even with modest power. Easy to work on, lots of aftermarket parts.
