Old VW suits the criteria, Beetle has better aftermarket support then type 3, but that's like saying there's more sheep in Australia then New Zealand, there's heaps either way. VW guru Canberra VWs is near you in tuggeranong, the Beetle exchange has cheap VWs in Fyshwick, people who usually struggle to change their undies have successfully rebuilt their bugs while stoned and listening to the Beatles. Only other simple, cheap and coolish cars I can think of are old Falcons and the like. And I'm not sure you would comfortably fit them, when was the last time you saw a small German? Even the short ones are built like brick shithouses.
I thought about old Citroens but the buy in price is getting up there for the proper ones, and the cost of sorting the hydraulics can get daunting, not to mention just living with the things with all the random shit they do/did. It's as if the requirement to work at Citroen was to be even more french then average.

I call bullshit on a beetle or anything pre 1980 being a 5 grand project for anyone who isn't doing major stuff themselves. Even 'good' examples of anything this old will need rust repairs and mechanical repairs. Not saying don't do it, just saying don't expect it to be 5 grand.
