what guido and beavis said; and though some parts are cheap, anytime you need specific work done you're getting charged porsche specialist money for a german S13 pretty much.
could be cheap as, but could very quickly be a money pit for a car that isn't really worth it.

Fair point, the labour is a killer and probably more killer in Canberra. DIY and learning / bonding with kids etc is what this is all about though.

true, in which case - beetle is the better buy out of these two imo;

- Not something massively complex as I am a mechanical noob beyond anything requiring a screwdriver or a spanner. I can do some very basic bodywork but that's about it.

Looking at the specs, fuck they're slow though. Any recent 2 litre hatchback would give a 911 a traffic light pasting.

That Crown is brilliant. Will need little/no bodywork and requires the simplest of mechanical work to get it on the road - either do the HG or if it's a bit sad get a later model M for a few hundred (at most) which bolts straight in (say $500 for full service and fluids).

This is your IDEAL $5k project as it doesn't really need anything.

Makes me feel bad about mine, it's in 200x worse condition and I paid (slightly) more for it. That said it doesn't have a BHG so I suppose can't complain too much.
