VW's can be made very "sporty"....lowered, excess rear camber, tonnes of engine mods available[Scat from US],13"wheels/fat tyres.....
[just need a safer interior heating set-up unless you enjoy inhaling leaking exhaust fumes]........................................
Suzuki Mighty Boy / BEC Rear Mid mount Suzuki 1150cc 450kg Hillclimber [in the build]

I think they can be made fast, very fast ... but not "sporty".
Mate of mine worked not far from a VW enfastener at Taren Point, you'd see (and hear!) Beetles & Type-III's behaving in a fashion which was downright impossible at the time (remembering that supercars of the era accelerated like an SS Commode does now). They were awesome, they were fast ... but you couldn't call them "sporty" (I can't imagine how scary a Beetle capable of 11's would've been to punt through the Nasho at speed!!).Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

That probably would have been Jeff Unwin & Shimo at Hellbug. They did a lot of the work on my Type 3, it handled pretty well. Before he went for the WRX notchback, the original green Hellbug held heaps of hillclimb / motorkhana records in the early to late 90s. You can get them to steer pretty well, you'd be very surprised.Originally posted by Forg View PostI think they can be made fast, very fast ... but not "sporty".

Mid 13s were quick in the 90s!

And here's one, no idea who's... WRX powered, seems to be handling the track OK.

Certainly sounds like its going hard...then you realise that everyone who was alongside you at the last set of lights is a long way up the road while you've just cleared the intersection.
Took this out again twice today. So it doesn't like cold mornings; I've never had a car that stalled in neutral before, but managed that three times on a 5 minute run to the shops. Much better behaved later in the day and after a proper warmup. Good to see this arvo that it didn't use any oil at all on the trip down from Sydney either.

Car that doesn't like the cold won't be much of a problem in Canberra, will it?
The Kurri Nostalgia Fest was on last weekend and people with old cars just seem to enjoy the fuck out of them.... As in the whole family just having the time of their lives.I own a two and a half litre Commodore

Yeah but Jeff and Shimo were self confessed nutjobs, and VERY cluey. I remember talking to one of them, years ago about their oxyboxer conversion and they mentioned they were building a 2.9L for the bug. Then there are the stories of the Kombis being hurled through corners so hard they were lifting wheels. Btw the white beetle at the end of the first vid looks to be Boris from Vintage VW supplies in his '56 oval with it's "aero" guards.Originally posted by gti6 View PostThat probably would have been Jeff Unwin & Shimo at Hellbug. Good to hear you made it Marco, I did my first highway trip the other day and was happy to report, like you, there were no nasty surprises! (aside from the need for another gear in the auto!)Pest Control - Brisbane, Gold Coast, Ipswich and South West QLD PF discounts apply.

Coil overs? Struts up front and torsion bars in the rear, coilovers will work in the front but just reset the rear torsion bars, iirc Type 3 bars are recommended as an upgrade on the cheap, along with the rear brakes.Originally posted by exwrxex View PostAgree on reinstating the chrome, its just a nicer look.
Another thing occurred to me - the 14 in wheels are probably lowering the gearing making it rev higher on the highway, but making it slightly faster around town.
My vote is for coilovers and porsche rims.
