The driver of the GTR is an experienced club racer as is the rider of the R1. To me the R1 is visibly quicker in the corners, you're not going to lap 5 seconds quicker with the only gains being made on the straights especially at Mallala where the front straight is tiny and the back straight has a kink in it.
The GTR is also in full time attack trim where as the bike is setup for a race weekend. He can and does 10 lap races in the 1:09's.
As far as I know the lap record for a tin top is an Alfa Romeo sports sedan with a 1:07.3 while Greg Murphy has managed a 1:08.1 in a V8 thupercar.
Australian Superbike (ASBK) lap record is a blistering 1:05.8
Okay so you got me.....
Can I say this - folk who can get the best out of even a bog standard R1 are thin on the ground. It is a real talent and skill to get the best from any bike. So indeed the potential is there but requires a giant set coupled with experience and real talent. In a car you just jump on the pedal as late as you dare and keep trying it later and later till you work out your braking marker. Bit more to it on the bike.
For the record - superbike lap record at QR is 1:09, V8s 1:10, open wheelers 1:04. Interestingly the best V8 qualifying time was by John Bowe in 1999 - 1:09
Make of that what you will.
Somewhere along the line this went off the rails. Joe Blow in the road most of the time is way slower around corners when on a bike.
