    TAFE spray painting course

So my 15yo son has just enrolled into a TAFE auto spray painting course, I was asking him about what things he may need to help with the course (spray guns etc) but he's not sure, I was going to get him a nice gun setup for xmas

so what does he need ?

A better profession? Is he doing this off his own back or an apprenticeship? If the later his employer should be able to give him a list of basic tools to start with.

A devilbiss GTI Pro is a good place to start looking.

He's doing it for the acquired skill, he's a good air bush artist and would like to do cars bikes boats etc so he wants to learn how to lay down nice paint

A quality mask should be first priority.

As above a deviliss gun. Also maybe see if he can get a apprenticeship if he is keen on the industry.

Depends on what he is painting. The best would be a mask with its own air feed and regulator etc. probably best to speak with the tafe, sometimes they have starter kits with masks overalls and a few other bits and pieces for a decent price.

If it like the night class I did in perth a number of years ago you don't need anything for the course, everything was provided except something to actually paint. One dude brought in an old vintage fridge which was a good call. Ideally its something small enough to prep and finish in the time you have.

No doubt he'll want a good gun once he's done the course.

Good prices. An hour an half away from sadly otherwise I'd be there everyday. Lol.

Any questions he has feel free to ask. I have a Badger and Iwata airbrush.
Normal guns. Satajet 90, 3x Iwata w400's, Iwata supernova and Sata 2.0 putty gun.

Plus heaps of other cheapies for shit.

Even if you buy him a cheap gun. He may find it easier.
Using a flogged out trade school gun can cause frustrating probs and an inexperienced user may think they are fucking up. I hope that makes sense.

A spray gun is like a vagina. Each one is different. Get used to the one you have. NEVER lend it out to mates.

CLEAN IT! nobody likes a dirty one.

I did a 6 week pre apprenticeship course at Glendale TAFE in 2008 for spray painting (didn't end up in the trade, good course with awesome teachers though).

Me and the 15 odd other people in the course walked in with nothing and on the first day they told us what was needed. We were told what would be needed, and anything that was required which we didn't have could be purchased through them (imagine the snap on van that mechanics get snap on gear from, except full of safety gear and with a really dodgy cunt selling you the gear. "Yeah guys, I gave you the wrong price that first day because I forgot about the GST, when I gives prices I don't talk GST." Slimy cunt.)

It was really only safety gear that you had to pay for. We only painted with acrylic rather than 2pac so didn't need a full face thingo (pissed off my tits and can't remember the right name) just a basic face mask with charcoal filters (carbon filters? Fucked if I can remember). Also needed overalls, ear muffs, steel cap boots and clear safety glasses. I think some rubber gloves were thrown in there as well, but if I had my time again I'd have just picked up a pack of heavy duty disposable gloves for half the price because the fancy ones the slimy cunt sold me were fucked after 2 weeks. I paid well under $200 for all the shit required and I bought everything from the slimy cunt.

TAFE supplied the guns, paint, a panel to paint and every thing else. The blokes that ran the show were top notch and it was a really good learning experience for me. Unfortunately the mob that organised the pre-apprenticeship course were a pack of dumb cunts that wouldn't know their arse from their elbow, but that's neither here nor there. I can still do an alright job of preping and painting a panel now and I'm thankful for the time I spent there.
