    Hmm, I thought this was all possible since ODB ports appeared. Certainly ripe for abuse though. Cue normal people trying to remove it like truckies & bussies did in the 90s.

      An event recorder was the subject of a court case not so long ago in Sydney. The police wanted the information out of it after a pedestrian fatality at Kogarah where a car mounted a footpath and hit a mum and her baby. The driver was young (learner maybe?) and her parents went to court trying to prevent the data being used. I don't know the outcome but it was the first one I had heard of and the media thought it was unusual enough at the time to write about it.

                    Toyota seem to claim stuff isn't being recorded, but somehow if there is a 'non trivial' event they can magically make the last 30 seconds worth of logged data appear, but perhaps I am just splitting hairs.

                    I like how the data seems only geared towards ratting on you in the case of an accident but you can't access it to prove you were not speeding, doing burnouts, etc.

                        I have seen a few cars put out results of exact times air bags deploy, not to sure about the other stuff but it has stopped a few people conning new airbags out of a small accident claim as the were already faulty before. This will save honest people premiums

                            As long as the owner/driver of the vehicle is given access to the black box information at the same time as Police I don't have a major problem with this really. It's when it's taken away by police at the scene of an accident and used against you without your knowledge/consent that stinks.

                              anyway some nerd will invent a box you put before the ECU that only records fine and dandy sunday driver stats anyway if its gets too extreme and a market opens up for it

                                If this was the case I would wire up a relay to the ECU and if I did happen to do something silly just flick a switch over and fry the NVRAM chips and good bye log history along with ecu. Only handy in a write off situation I guess.

                                I'm not a fan of this technology at all. It will never be used to prove my innocence, it will only be used to prove guilt.
