So you're driving along a big, open dual carriageway at 110 and you almost run into a car displaying L plates doing 80?Originally posted by MartyRX2 View PostRemember doing 110 on the Hume out if Sydney once and nearly running into an L plater myself, had a truck following closely behind and wasn't even aware that the 80k rule existed being a Victorian. Almost as retarded as QLD rules involving indicating on roundabouts.
You must be a good driver..

If one is sitting on 115 km/h and the learner is sitting on 75 km/h you are looking at a 40 km/h speed difference. This means that gap is closing at 11 metres per second, which doesn't give some one that much time to respond especially if they are in a typical freeway driving daze. One thing I recall whilst studying years of ergonomics is that people are absolutely terrible at judging closing speeds - it's just something innate about being human. For example look at the Southern uphill pull out lane on the Hume Highway at the Glenrowan service station. There would have to be one fatality there every year as someone drives into the rear of a slowish moving semi that is accelerating its way up that hill after visting the servo.Originally posted by StanM3 View PostSo you're driving along a big, open dual carriageway at 110 and you almost run into a car displaying L plates doing 80?

I had one of my nearest automotive near misses many years back whilst passing a semi trailer. There was a car coming towards me but the gap was plenty big enough for a safe passing manouvre. Things started to look bad when I got up towards the front end of the truck and I realised that another car travelling in the same direction as the truck that had been a long way in front of the truck was going really slowly. If I was to pull in front of the truck I would either have run into the back of the slow moving car or even had the truck punt me into the slow car. Normally if you can't safely get past another vehicle you can usually go for the brakes and tuck back in behind the vehicle that you are passing, but in this case the truck was braking too. This meant that the only option available to me was to overtake the slow moving car as well as the truck and to try and keep as far left as possible. Luckily everything turned out ok but it could have easily been a four vehicle collision. Are you optimistic or pessimistic about the end of the world?

Yeah thats fucked and it must happen a fair bit. The truck would have kept powering along thinking 'I'll get my speed up to overtake this L plater'....then looks in his mirrors, sees you, hits the picks, you didnt see the L plater because of the truck....everything goes to shit.
A good example of why:
a) I agree the different speed rules are dangerous
b) I very much prefer to have a fast car on the highway. Something like that happens, boot it and youre outta there.#WHOTW award winner #blessed #susanalbumparty
