I don't understand why that isn't an important consideration. We live in one of the largest countries with probably the biggest distances between cities and regional centres and very marginal populations in those regional centres. If anyone should have open speed limits... it's us.
There have been credible studies done showing increased speed limits either have no effect on accident rates or have actually *reduced* accident rates (ive probably linked/quoted them in previous threads)

Not surprisingly though, those kind of studies dont get done here....

Something about some Texas freeway changing their limits to the 85th percentile. Accidents dropped along that stretch the following years afterwards.

Almost all of the roads with open speed limits there are directly comparable to our roads here. They're not glass smooth, banked super freeways... they're just normal roads no different to what you would see in Australia... with no speed limit... yet they are safer despite the fact it snows in Germany which realistically should make our stats far better than theirs. But they aren't.

Do you know what the translation for autobahn is? It's car road. It doesn't refer to some mega highway.
What's your definition of a rural highway? Because if it's not a posted autobahn, (blue sign, a6, a81 etc) but a dual lane b road, even if it has the sign for no limits, they most certainly are limited.

Exactly. What we class as a rural highway would have a 100km/h limit in Germany.

Another study that shows that imposing a speed limit (130) on what were once unlimited results in marked reductions in fatalities and serious injuries.

UZZ31 - those studies usually from the USA and mostly relate to high quality freeways that have been raised back upto the pre-55mph limits of 65-75mph. Roughly 110-120km/h
