It's pretty simple really. Consumer choice. Society has changed in general in the last 10-15yrs.
McDonald's had the same menu for over 50yrs until the 80's or so when they introduced the taste sensation that is the Fillet-o-Fish followed by the McChicken in the 90's. Since 2000 the menu has expanded dramatically. Why would you go to maccas and get a cheeseburger when you can get the new fuck off mcangus mcdouble deluxe extra bacon even if it is a few extra bucks? (putting aside the fact you only have it when your pissed at 3am).
How many brands of beer where stocked at your local bottleo 10-15 years ago?
As consumers today we are fairly spoilt for choice in most markets something which a company whose founder most famously quoted 'they can have any colour they like as long as its black' has had to deal with.Various Japanese 2 doors.

What The..........Originally posted by Rona View PostMight use less fuel but at 25-30c/L dearer for fuel they are hardly cheaper to run. Prado, Pathfinder etc are a good $60-70k car to by the time you drive away which is a good $20k on a Falcon/Commode. $20-30k buys a lot of petrol last time I checked.
Our XR6 Ts average sub 10L/100km on the freeway and use around 14l/100km around town they are hardly expensive to run.

In Perth according to the Fuel watch site:
ULP 129.4
PULP 140.4
Diesel 135.9
My Amarok for example average's around 7.8 to 8.3 over the last 10'000kms, I get 1050kms per tank.
I ran many a Falcon Wagon company car in the past, and they came nowhere near close to that.1978 Opel Manta SR Berlinetta 1UZFE

A SUV is not a large car. I have driven a few lately, Subaru 3.6 something, Honda CRV and Range Rover Evoque and they are conveniant to live with, comfortable upright seating position, easy to get in and out of, good vision etc. - not a large car. No I don't want one but I want a large car less.Originally posted by teamtoken View PostYou'd have to be either mad or stupid to suggest that australians dont want large cars anymore when 4wd (or SUVs hurr durr) sales are skyrocketing.

I know a few people who want out of the SUV/dual cab market but most "large" wagons aren't that big in the boot compared to Falcon and VT-VZ Commodore wagons, or even VB-VS commodes! So they either stay in the large SUV/dual cab with canopy market or do what I had to do and get a people mover. If I needed to tow something as well as carry the dog I would have grabbed a dual cab, will almost certainly end up in one in the next couple of years since we plan on getting another Pyr which means it's either a van or dual cab ute. Nothing else is big enough, unless I find a mint VZ wagon.Originally posted by Rona View PostBullshit, the market moved on and those who use to drive large RWD cars are now driving even larger 4wds that cost more and use even more fuel. Hell look at the sales of Dual Cab utes now compared to 10 years ago so many people using them as family cars and they still guzzle fuel down like nobodies business.

If you sift through the abuse of people too stupid to defend themselves, the logic is relevant.Originally posted by Jim View PostFuck you're a dunce sometimes.
Gerlytruk buyers buy them because they're large; that's the prime requirement. They still want a big-thing that uses less juice though.
The reality is that a new Corolla is damned-close to as roomy as an XF; but uses 2/3 the fuel around town & prolly half on the highway. Plus the Corolla you buy for about the $25k an XF Ghia was worth in '86 is as well-equipped & safer too.Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.
