Ford at no point committed to anything past 2016 AFAIK. Holden committed based on getting Govt funding, which it got.

Gerlytruk buyers buy them because they're large; that's the prime requirement. They still want a big-thing that uses less juice though.
The reality is that a new Corolla is damned-close to as roomy as an XF; but uses 2/3 the fuel around town & prolly half on the highway. Plus the Corolla you buy for about the $25k an XF Ghia was worth in '86 is as well-equipped & safer too.
Sitting in a corolla I can open the driver door from inside the car with a simple reach, in an XF it's seatbelt off and a lunge

Is that because the handle has fallen on the floor?

No I don't want one but I want a large car less.
Huh? I'm sure you can get these SUV things in small medium and large. Maybe in China it's one size fits all though?

They seem to sell well in the their class (Large SUV), often topping sales. They seem to put the Prado in that class & the Kluger which is odd as Prado's more of a 4x4 really?

You're going to make me research the statement aren't you?

            Interior Dimensions (in mm, F = XF Falcon, C = 2013 Corolla):

            Front headroom: 955 (F) 970 (C)
            Rear headroom: 949 (F) 930 (C)
            Front shoulder room: 1502 (F) 1370 (C)
            Rear shoulder room: 1500 (F) 1367 (C)
            Front hip room: 1492 (F) 1325 (C)
            Rear hip room: 1492 (F) 1097 (C)
            Front legroom: 1064 (F) 1042 (C)
            Rear legroom: Sedan 968 (F) 908 (C)

As an aside, while those numbers are fairly large differences in the car world (someone correct me if that's wrong), I'll bet the difference in opening the door is more about ergonomics than the extra 7cm of width. All hail the Church Pew Volvo-Driver Position though; that'll be why the impression of so much space in the whole car these days, it's all in the front.

Corolla also not available in twin-turbo 4WD version, unlike XF.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

And this is for Girkytruk Forg. Compare the small/medium SUV's to 60's and earlier family type vehicles and we find a basic similarity - higher and more convenient loading and entry/exit. This is a practical aspect to any trendy popularity concerning soccer mum's and their SUV's, they are simply more convenient and practical to use than a Falcon sedan.

These things were cool, great performance for their time too. I thought they read what the market was after well with this car.

From an enthusiast point of view, I think a big imapact on the AU was the arrival of the LS V8 for Holden.

agreed. considering the hipo AU and VT1s had around 185-195kw, then you could order a base model VT2 with 220ish kw, it was mind blowing at the time.

Fuck I would love one of those stroker Tickfords. Problem is they still used the "cam valley splito special" Windsor block.

Problem with the TE50 was it's a bit like owning the nicest house in a dodgy street. Sure it might be fine in isolation but it will never escape the stigma of its neighbours.

Yep. Look at how many people on PF bought LS engined cars, largely influenced by the power they made. These sports models are where the profit margin is made.

Those Stroker Tickfords make a sound that no LS can get near.
