    hmmm logically -

If the engine was stolen - you would expect them to ask you in the next couple of days where you got it from.

If the car has been resprayed, and hasn't been rego'd in SA yet - It's possible that the rego instpector has no idea what they are looking at, and suspects that the numbers have been altered.

I'd certainly be noting any losses/money spent investigating why they have seized it... did they give you any paperwork for them taking possession of the car?
This is a post i wrote by mistake, which is nice...

VIN didn't come out until mid 80's. Everything before that was chassis number. This causes immense issues when transferring pre '86 cars interstate. I bought my 911SC from Vic, and registered it in NSW. Was a big hassle trying to find RTA and even blue slip places that understood this.

My old rally car had been reshelled and I sold it unregistered in about 1997. The guy only bought it on condition it was ready for rego and stupidly I agreed (mostly because I was desperate for cash after 2 years of full time study).
Had an engine first built by rallyart as a cash job from God knows where, the body number, chassis number and compliance plate were all from 3 different cars ( had been destroyed, rebuilt or reshelled about 4 times before I owned it, then once when I did). RTA said no way Jose', sent me to chatswood cops for an ID check, cop asked how long I had owned it, and I told him about 8 years (had the original paperwork) and he shrugged and gave me a new set of numbers to have stamped on.

Seems the RTA were a lot more anal than the cops actually were.

So with all that in mind, it may just be that it is pre-VIN, or that the engine is not listed being a fresh import.

Mind you, a mate back then built that lime green Yank LTD wagon that was at summernats a few times with the flame throwers etc. That car was also impounded when it went for rego, but wasn't recorded anywhere as being impounded. Turns out the detective that featured prominently on Underbelly decided he really liked the car and wanted it, so confiscated it (aka stole it).
Was over a year before he got it again, and he effectively had to steal it back. Part of the reason behind painting it lurid light green instead of the Mexican Grey it used to be.

Be very sure you have names, dates and as much paperwork as possible.
Turns out, far too much has been written about great men and not nearly enough about morons

My cousin had a EH and put a EJ front panels on it or the other way around had trouble getting rego for it due to the chassis number location on them, either he had 2 or didnt have one.
A mates uncle had a HJ or HZ that was regoed as a HQ due to the chassis number location on the frame

So that's pretty cool. Your shit can be taken from you without you being told why. Noice.

Shouldn't you be able to do a REV's etc type online check on the chassis number and it ought tell you if something is awry? All the states should have their stolen registers all linked up.

                        This.

Not sure if it will help the cause though, but could ruffle enough feathers.

"Yeah, it happened right in front of my own eyes. We can go down there, and I'll point the guys out to you".

Hmmm... Not if it'll work in your favour.

REVs checks are only accurate for money owing.

                                Wouldn't red-flag a stolen car?
