Fun fact - Doohan's "Nolan" helmets were not Nolans - Nolan only make polycarb shell helmets - too heavy for racing. They were X-lites.
"Where can we get hold of a Vincent Black Shadow?" "Whats that?" "A fantastic bike," I said. "The new model is something like two thousand cubic inches, developing two hundred brake-horsepower at four thousand revolutions per minute on a magnesium frame with two styrofoam seats and a total curb weight of exactly two hundred pounds."

If it suits your needs and you need them, go buy it. If not, don't bag out people who do because for all you know, they could be just using it to go ride to the local shops in 50kmh zones.
I have to say i am no fan of these folk who feel the need to wear 'special' clothing to whip down to the corner store for milk and ciggys. FFS pushy riders hit speeds of well more than 50kph and get around in virtually nothing and the thing they are riding has almost no brakes, nil suspension and tyres with a rolling width of a few mm. If you can't trust yourself to ride a couple of kilometres at urban speed without falling off then its time to find another hobby/mode of transport.

Hence any old crap (clothing) will do.

On the other hand if you are going for a bit of a speed in the hills then you are really going to regret cheap protective clothing. Anyone who has come off at speed knows how violent it is and will know that some half arsed chinese bollocks from a second rate supermarket is not a great choice.

As for helmets i am a bit of a AGV and Nolan kind of guy as the Jap helmets just seem so damned expensive. I suspect largely due to the Au standard sticker that needs to be applied therefore guessing Arai, Shoei no safer but maybe they are?

I have found Dr Irider gear to be surprisingly good quality at sensible prices.

And while I'm typing away is it just me or is there a whole lot of scary newbies on bikes at the moment wobbling around, incapable of maintaining the speed limit, without 'L' plates. How these folk passed any kind of license test is beyond me...??? I must admit though they are generally wearing flash looking new clobber which is good I suppose if they just slide down the road and don't hit anything substantial.

Don't get me wrong, good gear is good because they do put better materials to make their stuff. My riding leathers is worth $1k online excluding the Nolan helmet but for pissing about locally, these will do the trick and my bike isn't anything remotely fast nor do I ride it that way either given I'm a bit of a chicken shit on 2 wheels.

And yes, I crack almost 70 on the pushy downhill with nothing more than a lid which would probably cause some serious permanent injuries.

I stacked on to my head/face at 60 and had the bike hit me too. Had a $199? I think Nitro helmet on and it cracked along the jaw and I was out cold. Still stopped my brain exploding but I also wear better helmets now.

I've crashed in both my Dainese leather jacket and my Dainese 1 piece leathers. Still wear both after minor repairs so obviously they held up okay. My suit is actually still in really good condition especially considering how fast I was going when I hit the deck. Have seen cheap leathers rip open at the seems in far slower crashes. Textile normally fares a lot worse. A mate had a low speed crash wearing a Dririder textile jacket, the thing just shredded. There was so little of it left you could clearly see what t-shirt he was wearing underneath.

Landed on my head after highsiding at around 150-160km/h wearing a top of the line Bell star helmet. Force of the crash ripped the visor off (it was closed) and snapped the aerofoil thing off the back. Had no head injuries, not even a concussion. Was walking around a few seconds after the tumbling stopped. That was good enough for me, replaced it with another Bell star.

Nolan and X-lite are the same company.

Lol, Im currently on my Ls and I go past quite a few other riders either on Ls or on bikes that would be legal on Ls, looking all tense like theyre barely keeping the bike upright. Makes me confident that I'll pass my Ps test next week. :p

Saw a dude yesterday on his repsol 1000rr, had enough time to put his flash boots, draggin camos and expensive helmet but no jacket, shirt or singlet, was just hoping to see him stack it so I could have laughed at him.

Guys with "15 plus years riding" failed their Ps test, where as I passed with only my 3 months on L's. The key is to listen to the instructor and what they test on.

You can get done for silly things like putting your foot down in the testing area, even though you completed the current exercise without any problems.

I've seen more people riding motorcycles on the road wearing thongs in the last 9 months (working in Gladstone, Qld) than I have in the 29 years I've been alive previous to this.

Yeah thankfully Ive got a few friends who have all recently done the test. Theyve all said the same thing. Need alot of focus on things like head checks and 'setting up the brake' rather than riding smoothly. Seems a bit dumb but at least Ive only gotta pass it once so not much point complaining.

I think my biggest worry will be accidentally speeding. :p

Testers want to feel confident you won't die from something basic which as you say mostly revolves around low speed moves, a quick emergency brake and them being able to see you really visually doing head checks all the time. I had my test bike get stuck in neutral, tester came up and kicked it out and told me to nail it, pulled large unexpected wheelstand and scored a pass anyway. :p

Hey, I resemble that remark! :p

I honestly did zero days on the road on my L's. Did Qride and got my license and riding my 660cc Monster. I'm surprised how easy it is to get your license. Difference probably is I know I'm unexperienced unlike my mate who did the same but thinks he's super fast because he's got a RS125 Aprilla... After a couple of rides, I'd say that I'm not a danger to anyone else other than myself :D Riding pushies for years helps be aware.

Lol, so you bought pretty much the most expensive L plater bike, and youre barely gonna ride it before you get onto your full license? :p

I'm riding it every couple of days (I need a car for work)... but yes, it was the bike I wanted and if I took the restriction off it, put some pipes on it, I may keep it longer than a year.
