    Are they any good?
I had one for three years and sold it to a friend who's had it for more than a year now.

Yes, they're good. Loads of torque, and it was faster in a straight line than the 86 I replaced it with (not saying much) and got better fuel economy. Comfortable too, with all the mod cons.

Mine was the six speed manual though, not sure I'd go with the DSG.

I'm confused. So are these the good ones?

They only sold sedans in turbo form, in that shape, in Oz ... that's an RX, which is a decent enough car but doesn't really meet the "performance" criterion.
There are a coupla grey-imports floating around of course.

It's my belief the "good ones" are the sexier shape after that, and the 2.5L GT is better than the 2.0L one.
I can't recall if it was this thread, but there's also some love for the 3.0L n/a "H6" badged cars ... actually I think they were also made in the shape you posted, although can't recall if they were sold in Oz in manual form.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

We still have one of these

Perfect car for the Mrs and for me to drive occassionally.

Ours is 3 years old now, just ticked over 35'000kms, full leather, Bluetooth and DSG

Goes well, no issues, stereo pumps, heated seats are hot.

            Criteria for me is:
something with room for impending mini paddington and assorted crap, would be nice if it was a manual, cannot be fast as nopics is a leadfoot. That seemed to fit the bill. Must not need uber expensive maintenance either. Plus under 10K.

Sorry to comment on this thread but I was copping it a little on some of my comments about suggesting a Magna as a performance wagon.

Well the brothers manual Magna just did a 13.7 second quarter mile pass tonight at Willowbank, racing against an r34 GTR (13.3 lol!)

To me that is plenty quick for a performance wagon under 10grand. Plus no one would ever want to steal it.

lol so much Magna hate. My 13's for 1300 Magna would kill all these wagons. I don't see why a Magna Wagon couldn't go nearly as fast as my 13.5 @102 MPH.
                    $800 Magna + $800 380 motor = 13.5 @102 170KW ATW

I know of a dead stock caldina that has run a 13.8 at eastern Creek just need to be brutal to get it off the line fast.

Awd magna was auto only and were a high 15 second qtr at best they aren't chopping anything. The times might be impressive but an xr6 with some extractors intake and tune will make bulk power and do similar times. Turbos driven by someone with a clue will shit in high 12s with very few mods.
                      If in doubt power out

S4 wagon with a tune will cut a low 13 if you want to compare ...
I wanna do 8s bruv! Without no stinkin' POWERCHIP

Id rather have a rock in my shoe when hikin' than have a POWERCHIP in my car when racin'

I love my Magnas as much as the next homosexual, infact I had one of the best looking Magnas of all time....ALL TIME!

Fast they may well be.....but I like a little comfort with my speed these days, and not look like i'm from a Homeswest housing estate when I arrive at peoples houses or workplaces.

I thought that manual performance wagons were 240GL wagon with 1uz and turbo

So you drive a poor mans Volkswagen!!!!!!
                              What passes for comfort nowadays?

                              Power steering?
                              Power windows?
                              Leather seats?
All available in Magna's if not easy enough to find parts cheap enough to retro fit.

Homewest estate is full of import wagons and Skodas.
Can't blame them, they depreciate just as quick as a 10 year old Magna!
