Pretty sure any device or object that obscures the plates for any amount of time is illegal to be used on roads?

you'd want to be in a fast car, because the guy you just blinded in the car behind you is going to want to beat the crap out of you.....

Lobster was looking at this before, And i think trying flood or block the plate with IR light would do the trick, just have a easy to reach but hidden switch to turn it on and off as needed, try your camera and the remote for the tv and you will get the idea. As for the switch something like a factory fitted switch for fog lights would work with a separate switch for the fog lights if fitted

Not fitted yet .... not sure if I will though.
I reckon if you needed to hit the button quickly due to an impending camera you would most likely get a knock on the door for two fines as it was almost obscured.

Problem is in SA cops will take your car from you if you run no plates. Nearly happened to me. I was just lucky as I was caught when the court case opposing the laws was going on and they weren't allowed to seize cars. Still got over $1K in fines though. Hence looking into other things.

what's stopping you from running a xenon bulb shining over the plate 24/7 connected to the cars 12V system?

I'm with Tripper. Flood the shit out of the plate area with IR. No one will know except the deadshits at Govco flicking through the pics and handing out the tickets. Been thinking of doing this for 10 years but its just easier to slow down for the generally fairly well marked cameras. Unmarked cars on the other hand.......way to detect that its filth rather than gramps in the Camry would be good...?? Anybody?

I wouldn't be doing any high speed runs to find out if it works

Someone design a IR flood for the plate and I will do testing. I pick up enough tickets when I drive to make it worthwhile for me to do trials.

Jaycar sell IR LED's and a small spotlight type as well, maybe give those a try?

First one is too big. Can the human eye see that these are on at night?

If all the emitted light is in the IR spectrum then no.
