Latest update incl new website
http://www.thelongestdrive.net/
Car is arriving going by sea in early the New Year and we will be ready to roll around March 1st - took advice from you guys.
Route is highway #1 with a few detours to special landmarks. Personally I am a bit confused about #1 between Cairns and Darwin though. Any advice??
We are now also supported by Porsche in Australia

Excellent.
Looks to be a late start to the monsoons, first cyclone formed off the north of WA last night.
As for the Darwin -> Cairns section, this map may be of assistance:

You'll be coming from the west along the Overlander's Way, and I'd expect the spirit of the trip would have you driving North at Cloncurry then east at Normanton.
And as for the Western end of that segment coming out of Broome, you don't want to do the Gibb River Road... go through Fitzroy Crossing and Hall's Creek instead. Is it crazy how saying sentences backwards creates backwards sentences saying how crazy it is?

Another vote for not doing the Gibb River Road at this time of year, the Pentecost River could be up and if you can't cross it you could lose a day or two backtracking if you are heading from Derby. Also the road is shit at that time of year. The wheel in my avatar is the result of a rock at 40km/h that also twisted the chassis of the shitbox Prado I was driving.
If doing the bitumen road through Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek I wouldn't be staying in either place if you can help it.

First cyclone of the season is due to hit the east coast in a couple of days. Only a cat1, but it will still have plenty of rain and combined with the king tides, the hiway will likely be cut for a couple of days.

I'd seriously consider continuing up from Normanton to Karumba. It's about a 2hr round trip at the speed limit (bit I've done it MUCH quicker - not many cops up there). Normanton is a massive shithole whereas Karumba is a lovely little seaside town. A beer at the Sunset Tavern, at Sunset, is a rather special experience. Otherwise loooong trip sans coast from Cairns to Darwin.
