In business, it's always better to under promise and over achieve rather than the other way around, otherwise you're not going to get too far! The mechanic clearly cannot manage their work load, and should have been up front about it. To some, it's more important to just get the work, and then just deal with the disgruntled customer later on when the work isn't completed in the quoted time frame. On the flip side, in my time building cars, things more than often go wrong. It ALWAYS blows out... time and money! When I get work done on my car that should be done in 1 week, I normally make allowance for 2 weeks... that way there is a buffer for when things don't go to plan, and I always get my car back when I want/need it.

There is no excuse for poor communication and being fucked around though. There are so many fuck heads in every industry that don't know how to communicate. Seeing as I am in the building industry, and communication (for coordination) is absolutely critical, it REALLY makes my dick itch when cunts are too lazy to make a simple phone call.

The annoying thing is they arent saying "Oh we having a problem with xyz..."

They just say "yeah it will be ready, then oh no its not, you have to talk to the other guy but he isnt here so he will ring him back" then never does.

Car is needed for powercruise next weekend so need to get it back to prep it as this weekend is the only time to do it.
Im not only sure Im HIV positive.

Nobody likes the mushroom treatment .Being kept in the dark and fed bullshit.

PS Racespec am a retired builder and can but agree with your comments plus we know the difference between a quote=fixed price and an estimate = an educated ??guess or a low price to suck you in and will only go up and up

In my section of the automotive industry I seen a price rise of $800 on a $1800 job that is the highest I have ever seen and was purely a fuck up but we let the customer know what was going on the whole time, the job was meant to be one day and took a week.

just recently i did a full rebuild of a car (entire car nearly) which involved stripping one car and putting some of the stuff in the other car , between other work ... in 5 weeks. had to fully rebuild engine including replacing the block , pistons , bearings and complete cylinder head overhaul (he dropped a valve at QR bouncing off the limiter), replace wiring loom , strip and rebuild gearbox and driveline components (including stripping and machining and welding up viscous hub coupling), wire in new ecu , new exhaust system , different seats , different carpet , wire in all gauges , modify fuel system including dropping fuel tank to install fuel pumps ,get it complianced and rwc and registered , panel and paint work , rebuild brake system , the list went on and on , 2 pages of parts over 40 hours of labour charged , although we probably spent more like 80 or more hours on it ... the labour was charged out at $50 an hour , and all parts were at cost price , we did it because not only he is a mate of mine he has been a bloody good customer over the years spending over $60000 at least , the final bill drive away was about $13000 ...

heres a link to it on the dyno .. 228hp at 4 wheels

I think a lot of places put harder shit down the list of priorities to help cashflow.
i.e. they can turnaround a few services in a day, do a quick OTR intake install, etc and get cash in the bank that day.

I once had a place do engine out, and patch up/spraypaint the engine bay, took 6 months, heaps of promises - nothing ever done.
Meanwhile, got Boostworx in Adel to wire up an engine, tune, and heaps of other fiddley conversion bits, and it was done fucking quick, couple of week turnaround.

Subscribing for secrets on getting a mechanic to deliver within agreed timeframe, or at least to gimme a call when it starts falling behind. I've tried it all- reasoned logic, threats, pleading, verbal abuse- with 0 success.

Funny thing about all this (from my experience with talking to workshop owners) is the one thing they hate is having cars hanging around taking up space with no work being done to them.

This is one of the main reasons why I like to do all my own work.

                        Yeah, too right.

I've got a customer's car that's been here a bit over 2 weeks now. Spent just as much time chasing up parts quotes, and organising sublet work for it than actually working on it. To give you an idea, I've already clocked 8 hours actually twirling spanners on it. On top of that, I'm set for another 2-3 week wait for parts that are being shipped in from the UK to put it back together. I don't like the situation anymore than the customer does, but sometimes, that's how it goes.

yojimbo dropped his car off yesterday.. fitted new ecu, wired wideband controller, fitted and wired flex fuel sensor, tuned from scratch and its ready to go now... didn't have to wire the entire ecu but if we did would still be ready to go tomorrow..

I had my car at a place in Penrith once. They used to do alot of rotaries and fabrication. It was there for over a year.
                              No mates rates either.

Hope it is not the same place. Good guys but take a lot of time.

Meh. What a coupla months between mates.....

I literally dug my R32 out yesterday because I need to fuck it off as I need the space.

It's been covered with assorted packing materials like void fillers n stuff, and I hadn't seen it since 2010, when I put it there in disgust after it blew a turbo after a million race kilometres. I wonder if the tyres are still round? Fucking Skyline unreliable shitboxen!
