Army/Navy refers to the measurement, not the quality. It's not a justification, it's a standard. Steel fittings work great but are heavy and ugly. China fittings (most everything on the market is made in China btw) are shit.

The MIL standard specifies the quality of the material too FWIW.

Except it doesn't as far as we (car guys, not aircraft carrier guys) are concerned. It only refers to the measurement.

Solid and heavy is fine in earthmoving and mining but inpractable in a sport where weight reduction is paramount to performance.

I'm not at nor will ever be at the stage where 200g in fittings makes a difference in performance........... I doubt it would unless your in some form of top tier motorsport anyway? Even if it did, I would still pocket the $1000 saved and take a shit before the race or just not be a fat cunt lol

I still think they are a bit of a wank, they are anodized red, blue and purple for the same reason they give you stickers when you buy them

Mil Spec or Military Standards details the design and manufacturer of the fastener or fitting down to the fine details. The procurement specifications have further, very complete requirements for the material specifications.

Pardon the shit house scan from a book but this is a partial spec sheet on a mundane bolt

Funnily enough the reason why a large industry serving the car high performance industry exists are it's specific demands.

The industrial hydraulic fittting and hose styles and types don't go within a bulls roar of satisfying the specific requirements of high performance automotive, let alone competition use.

Pretty much. The MIL AN fitting spec lists porosity, stress loads etc. Its up to the manufacturer to make it to suit the spec. If Manufacturer A makes theirs out of Ti and it well exceeds the spec, while Manufacturer B makes theirs out of Al which just meets the spec, then both are AN fittings. Ditto for the Steel ones, the one thing that the MIL AN spec doesn't specify is minimum weights.

Point completely missed. When car guys refer to AN fittings they're only talking about size. I don't for a minute expect that every fitting produced in Guangzhou for car guys meets every requirement in your awesome scans.

                            Size?

They are talking about a fitting that meets a whole lot of functional criteria- the taper angle on the sealing surfaces might be important, the bore diameter, the assumption that it has a hex to drive it, a flat seat, the hardness of the anodising and so on..

and this is why a military bolt costs $100 each, and the washers are $15.

                              go taxpayers!

                                .
"Where can we get hold of a Vincent Black Shadow?" "Whats that?" "A fantastic bike," I said. "The new model is something like two thousand cubic inches, developing two hundred brake-horsepower at four thousand revolutions per minute on a magnesium frame with two styrofoam seats and a total curb weight of exactly two hundred pounds."
