They ran live axles with leaf springs, though trailing arms for location and they worked very well indeed in rallying. That's how it's done properly on a road car, just use slightly different spring & damping rates for the road.

Edit - also the US Trophy Truck scene. The suspension on those really impresses me.

This. Leaf springs are fine for suspension duties.. justnot so great for locating diffs.

If i could get a new model Torana, with a TT V6 manual, which weighed 1500kg for SS money I'd have it parked outside right now.. And im not in the market for a new car

Surely the Cruze shouldve been the Torana (ie. rwd and scaled down version of a Commo), then basically half the components of the Commodore would be able to evolve and live on, not just scrap the lot

4WD's/SUV's are shit, you can't use them as any sort of example of how cars should be!

The only difference betweeen a 7/8 size Commodore & a Commodore would be physical size. Weight, performance, fuel usage, cost; these would be the same.
What's the point, why would anyone buy more of those than Commodores?
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

                Why are people buying Cruises?

They just want a smaller car than a Commo/Falcon

Scaled down Commo, with 4cyl - ttV6 options, call it a Torana, build it here and cunts dont have to drive Daewoo Cruises? Surely 1500kg wouldve been achieveable

All the dash, seats, etc couldve been more or less adjusted to fit in a scaled down car.. As far as rear passangers; whats a Cruise like in the back? (I have no idea)

Obviously cant happen now, funny on Holdens own website about the Torana concept it specifically mentions changing markets

                  Ok......

The 2004 Torana concept was the development of the Alpha platform ( mid-size, front-engine, rear-wheel and four-wheel drive) and they chose to test the market with the design cues of the 2006 VE commodore.

The public went nuts over the look and the design basically carried over straight to the VE.

The VF would have been Alpha instead of Zeta platform but the whole GFC thing happened in the middle and the US unions had a bit to do with it too from memory.

Fast forward to 2013, Cadillac and Chevrolet are the only ones using the Alpha so far for the CTS and the 6th gen Camaro.
The CTS still uses the twin-turbo 3.6L V6 but now produces 313kw instead of the 280kw of the 10 year old concept car with VE panels.

cruize's are mostly built here, the right size, the right badge, the right price, are cheaper to build, easier to package and comply with emissions, and most people apart from some cunts on this forum give a fuck what wheels are driven. and the build development costs have been shared over the GM world.

that wouldnt have happened with the torana

                      Smaller, more economical & cheaper.
Problem is that Cruze prices are being subsidised by Commodore prices; cost near as much to build a Cruze as a Commodore.
Make something like that Torana concept based on a Commodore platform & it weighs the same & costs as much to build. Yet people will want to pay less to buy something like that.

They're nowhere near as much cheaper to build as their RRP is below the Commodore's; it's a bit of an artificial situation.

Looks like we might be getting a V8 Commode out here soon, shame it will be 100k +.

BANGKOK, THAILAND: On display at the Chevrolet booth at the 30th Thailand International Motor Expo 2013 is a Chevrolet SS Concept. It is Chevrolet’s first V8, rear-wheel-drive performance sedan since 1996 and is designed to deliver performance on the street and on the track. The Chevrolet SS Concept is based on the new VF Commodore and manufactured at GM Holden’s plant in Elizabeth, South Australia.

I always thought the Torana was more just a concept to test the styling of the ve without saying hey this is what the next commodore looks like.
                          If in doubt power out

Park a cruze next to a VT commodore and tell me which is smaller, then get inside and tell me which has more room. There is fuck all in it.
1500kg...you're dreaming. Show me a 5 star NCAP mid-size car that seats five that is under 1600kg.

Are you sure about this... I clearly remember (but can't remember where?? that the VE Platform would be in use by Holden for 10 years (to justify the massive investment) and the changes along the way would be evolutionary.
