Kids have it easy these days. My parents got us up and made us walk to school. And it kept us from getting fat and made us realize they aren't a taxi service.

We were a one car family until I was in grade 5 or 6, so there wasn't the luxury of a car being available to drive me to school. Rain or shine, it was a 3/4 mile walk each way to Primary School.

I used to work at a High School in the same suburb as the article. Two public schools nearby but parents would drive with disregard for common sense or the rules. I wish I could say I had faith in parents to think of the kids around them but I have zero confidence in their ability to think about their actions.

Today on the motorbike I witnessed a lady picking her kids up from Malkara Primary in Garran pretty much flat foot her Tarago (turning left) out of the schools driveway and onto my side of the road, before wilding swinging it back into her lane. Lucky I was doing about 10km/h due to cars everywhere.

Then, on the way back from buying some Xmas presents in Manuka, some mum in a Landcruiser decided to not even look, blasted thru a Give Way sign and again, I was lucky I had the front brake covered and was watching her approach the intersection at 11ty km/h.

The problem is attitude with these people. There are heaps of Mums and Dads in their cars picking their kids up, and most of them are fine, then there is the fuckwits. I guess it's like everything... That's how you ram a fence doing a 3 point turn. They drive as if the accelerator and brake are on/off buttons.

The enabler for this is the ridiculous ride height, assumption of safety for the driver and occupants due to the height seated in the cabin (Selfish). And speed bumps, driveways are treated like any other flat road with their newfound suspension travel.

I also live near a school and have had fuckwits park their piece of shit across my driveway looking at me all confused and rolling their eyes when opening the garage they happen to be blocking.
The school has tried to move the bus bay and try to get parents to pickup their kids from elsewhere. But all has failed esp due to council failure to co-operate. The street is too narrow, 2 SUVs parked on either side = residents can barely get in/out of their driveways. And a bus can't fit through the street. Some of them end up parking half on the kerb/grass - fuck you very much.

I have 3 schools near where I live. If I go home around finish time, it's fucking crazy. I don't understand why the mums can't park a couple streets away and get their kids to walk, instead of doing crazy maneuvers to park right out the front, then drive away like a mad man.

It's not hard to imagine this sort of tragedy occurring. Terrible for all involved.

Our kids school is the same, its just fucking crazy - we park 100-200m up the road where there is ALWAYS parking, and seriously, just on the cusp of school grounds still. But most mums just don't want to hop out and want to park right outside the exit gate.


Really sad state of affairs, tragedy. RIP.
