When they did my engine, he bolted a knock sensor on the motor. Sat in the driver's seat with the laptop, and tuned it from there.
Why would you lean over the motor?

I'd like to see this knock detection method implemented with a 265ci Hemi six...
If the cunt could hear anything over the timing chain rattle, he'd have superman fucked...

I've had a tyre let go at full noise on the dyno, a tyre exploding at 280kph is a shrapnel bomb, rubber and steel belt went a fair distance. I don't stand anywhere near cars during dyno pulls since that happened.
A mechanic was killed in Canberra many years ago when an engine blew up. Not sure the circumstances, I think it was just an engine running on a stand (engine dyno?), not actually in a car on a dyno. He was an experienced middle-aged mechanic not a young cowboy.
Wouldn't there be some sort of tuning widget/gizmo that can be hooked up to the motor and dyno to tell if it's detonating?
Was at Reid Tafe. Flywheel came off an VW engine on the engine dyno and took out the teacher. Was in the late 80s from memory. Happened in front of a room full of apprentices so it was a pretty big deal at the time
A guy i know was working at a Jap wreckers bench testing engines in a stand. Had a 20B rotary buzzing away with the tourque converter still bolted up to the flex plate. The bolts either fell out or snapped and the spinning converter took off across the workshop, slicing its way up his torso and taking out a massive chunk of flesh about 2cm from the wedding tackle. Blood everywhere and had to get some big skin grafts. Looked very nasty, but he was lucky it wasnt worse.

Had a tailshaft snap on a VL I was dyno tuning at high rpm in 4th gear (idk like 150-180kph wheel speed I guess) punched a hole through the floor pan right behind the drivers seat. Everyone around at the time just ran off and hid behind shit. Nothing I could do except sit there hard on the brakes waiting for it to stop. Lucky I guess.
Also had some big block V8 yank tank thing kick down a gear unexpectedly under full load, closest a car has ever come to climbing off the rollers.
Had some shit box dirt track thing in one day that had the radiator mounted inside the cabin in the rear passenger side of the car with no sort of protection around it.
Dunno what my point is other than cars and dynos are dangerous enough and random shit can happen that you don't expect even without putting your head near the engine. Just being in or around a car is dangerous whether its on a dyno or on the street or in some kinda motorsport. Not saying I would recommend sticking your head in the engine bay of car on the dyno, but I don't think its ok to imply you are safe by simply not having your head near the engine.
OHS would have a heart attack if they saw some of the shit that goes on in most automotive workshops, even without a dyno. I remember when I was a young bloke working on site and having some OHS cunt drive past, chucked a U-turn to come back and tell us it was unsafe to be more than 3 foot off the ground on a ladder.
pfffft knock sensors..... like the comments on FB says...
He is listening for pinging/detonation, if something isn't quite right, Aboody Noxqzs will hear it before anything or anyone else does, think of him as insurance.

I had a tyre come apart on the Ls7 RX3. ripped the whole rear guard off it.. dynos are speed limited to 250kmh to try and stop that but it still happens..

Yep, when I was there, mid 1990s, they had bolted the doors closed and were pretty blunt about the matter. Shit hit the fan for some reason when we ran our cars up on the rollers at Reid, apparently one of the senior admin people there though both dynos were not to be used.
At bendigo tafe not long after I left, they ran a car on the dyno, and it jumped off and pinned someone to a wall. Not sure if they died or not. So they did the same thing.. locked the doors to it.
Such a fucking waste
