Leaning over engine whilst doing dyno pulls?

He was a CIT teacher it happened when the mechanics used to train at Reid, when I was leaving CIT they were only just setting the engine dyno back up Phill is the only teacher allowed to run it ATM as he has extensive dyno history. I actually helped Phill set up the 304 that was going to be the test engine for the cert 4 guys he taught me how to reco injectors for it, so my work let me loose on their injector machine same as the coda CIT taught me on (works is older).Originally posted by Falchoon View PostA mechanic was killed in Canberra many years ago when an engine blew up. Not sure the circumstances, I think it was just an engine running on a stand (engine dyno?), not actually in a car on a dyno. He was an experienced middle-aged mechanic not a young cowboy.
Wouldn't there be some sort of tuning widget/gizmo that can be hooked up to the motor and dyno to tell if it's detonating?
Edit if you wanted to know the flywheel let go at near full revs so about 5k and worked it's way through the bell housing and hit him in the head (he entered the room to choke the engine or turn off the fuel tap when the engine wouldn't slow), it is thought an apprentice left the bolts loose or over torqued them.

Phill is allowed to let people watch the chassis dyno on the car show day at CIT he cracks the shits when too many people show up and start sneaking closer so he closes it down.Originally posted by irsa76 View PostYep, when I was there, mid 1990s, they had bolted the doors closed and were pretty blunt about the matter. Shit hit the fan for some reason when we ran our cars up on the rollers at Reid, apparently one of the senior admin people there though both dynos were not to be used.

Legend has it, a Kenworth prime mover broke loose on the dyno at Shellharbour Tafe. Not sure what the story was with it, the staff were very cagey (no pun intended) about it.
Only time in the whole 4 years I was there doing various things I saw it in action, a Wayne Penrose-built N/A Beetle cracked the 100kw mark, after much tuning. Cunts were stoked.Originally posted by brewdlesIn short, some cunt at test and tune had a 250cc honda turning to 11ty and it sounded porn. Do that.

And the look on their face when some P-plater asks "Can I watch when its on the dyno?" and you tell them "No."Originally posted by 10sec rx7 View PostAnd people wounde why I don't let them in my room when dynoing their car..
Then they turn up anyway with 4 of their idiot mates, walk right past all the "No customer entry to workshop" signs, lean all over the fucking car while its on the dyno and film it with their phones so they can post it later on facebook when their ca18 silvia makes 150kw at the wheels. Then ask questions during and after every pull, making the job take twice as long.
Idk how other people deal with it, I was never good at telling people to outright fuck off while I am trying to work. People just ignore you when you ask them politely. Thats the sort of shit that made me get out of the industry.

I gotta admit I was one of these guys the times when I was getting cars tuned. Stupid thing to do now that I think about it.Originally posted by Pyrite View PostAnd the look on their face when some P-plater asks "Can I watch when its on the dyno?" and you tell them "No."

In that instance, it's a trust thing.
As an operator/tuner/mechanic, you're probably doing nothing wrong and honestly trying to get the best out the car for the customer's money, but some just can't see that.
They'll hover around, and second-guess your work, and whinge when it should've made more power, or torque, or lit them up on the rollers and snapped the chains, or whatever it is they perceive as being 'tuff' these days.Originally posted by brewdlesIn short, some cunt at test and tune had a 250cc honda turning to 11ty and it sounded porn. I just shut the roller door on the dyno room.. the look on their face is priceless.. im probably lucky that room is down the back of the shop so they cant really hang around.. but im not afraid to tell someone to get the fuck out..Originally posted by Pyrite View PostAnd the look on their face when some P-plater asks "Can I watch when its on the dyno?" and you tell them "No."

It would depend on the mood I was in as to how much it annoyed me having people hang around. Honestly I was too nice to be rude to people and a little scared of pissing off customers and having them post all over the internet that I was a rude cunt or whatever.Originally posted by 10sec rx7 View PostI just shut the roller door on the dyno room.. the look on their face is priceless.. im probably lucky that room is down the back of the shop so they cant really hang around.. but im not afraid to tell someone to get the fuck out..
Yeah, I totally understand that people get excited about their car being on the dyno and they want to see the results. Its one thing if its just a power run or whatever, I mean shops run dyno days for car clubs all the time and you end up with 50 people crowded around all trying to get a look.
But when you are working on a full tune from scratch on a fresh setup and someone is hovering around and literally sticking their head through the drivers window to see what you are doing, then asking "whats happening, whats going on, whats it doing?". Like fuck what other job that involved high speed heavy machinary working with tremendous forces are random cunts just allowed to stand around "because they are curious whats happening"
Having someone stand 2 feet away from you and constantly asking questions while you are doing any job is annoying as fuck.
And yeah always loved when the dude whos car and money it is asks for a "safe tune" which is exactly what you give them. But then afterwards he posts the dyno graph on the internet and his mates and random internet nobodies tell him how Johnny Fuckwits car made more power.
Turning into a whiney rant, but was in large part my own fault because I was marketing my work at the lowest common denominators at the time. If I had my chance again I would charge 3 times the price and only work with more mature customers instead of p-plater shitboxes.

Yeah like I said the worst one I had was some big fuck off V8 thing. It was just in for a power run, I thought it would make bulk torque so it was tied down more than I would normally bother with the jap engines I was usually doing. I thought the gearbag was a full manual but turns out it wasn't, had it loaded up then it kicked down a gear unexpectedly and climbed right up to the top of the rollers. Fair shit my pants.Originally posted by Kyle View PostNever seen a car jump the rollers but I've watched a few dunno runs and always scared me a little to see the wheels lift up onto the front roller and off the rear... Fuck being anywhere near that when it goes..
I did most of my work on a dyno-dynamics but later on I worked with a dynapack which always felt a lot safer. And it was better for loading up fully rather than wheels spinning and shit, made for a more accurate tune. The turn around time for getting cars on and off was a pain in the ass though compared to a roller dyno.

People say that about me on Internet forums all the time.. Ls1 forum was a good example.. I just say yep I'm rude I'm trying to fucking work so piss off and leave me alone.Originally posted by Pyrite View PostIt would depend on the mood I was in as to how much it annoyed me having people hang around. My RX7 lost a wheel on the dyno - scared the fuck out of me, Billy who was tuning it lost his shit at me, tore a flare off the car and bent my wheel studs.
Then had to pillage another car for wheel studs so I could race the next day...
I don't blame any dyno operator for telling people to fuck off...The older i get, the better i was...
