To be honest, the PITA restrictions wouldn't justify the $500/yr saving, for me. Not on one car. If I had room for 5 club-rego cars that'd be different I think.

LS with aftermarket electronic ignition control, and an adapted Bosch K-Jetronic made of Volvo/Saab/Pleb-BMW bits & the occasional 928GTS bit (fuel distributor)?Originally posted by E-Z View PostLs with carb?Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. What's a big V8 Benz of that age worth? I'd have thought they bottomed a decade ago? If you can really get one, something that looked like that classic AMG 300SE(L?) race-car would be cool (although getting it to change direction might be a challenge?).

Cheapest one on CarSales is $13k, but the description makes it sound decent & wonder why the others are $20k+.Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. It's more like 700+. The green slip on the 68 model 510 was 690 alone. I only get time to drive non daily's once every two months or so hence ill live with the restrictions.RB26......................Again

Among the restrictions are only being able to go to, from & on club events - or fixing it. So either you lie a lot & run that risk, or you can't go on an ad-hoc winter Sunday morning blatt when the weather's perfect. So even if it's $700 (sorta surprised an '80 Ovlov is that much cheaper on green slip than '69 Datto - wonder what their logic is?), it still wouldn't be worth it (from my POV - I know a few people who only have time to attend club events, would rock for them!).Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. I don't suppose you can fit LSx heads onto a VH era SBC block ... somehow? Must Shirley be plenty of rednecks in the USA scared of EFI that carbs etc are widely available?Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Wouldn't have to even be that early, I wouldn't think? Unless there's an advantage to pre-1984 other than pollution regs? Only suggested Chev because those Holden engines don't have the best rep for being easy to mod; but that could of course be bogus.
Over in Fordland ... what sort of power (and engine management) did the crazy Italians fit to 351C's which might also fit in an XE? Daggymod which is almost undaggy due to being popular back then, XE with XF nose & tail & interior, with 351C & some sort of crazy modded 6cyl Motronic ECU? [Probably couldn't work - but maybe worth a look, I think the one year or so of Volvo Motronics just pre-ULP may be reprogrammable]Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Ask Cosworth what a Sierra XR8 would be worth in South Africa, and personal import?
Or build a replica using a base car from NZ?Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

Look for the w116s, style not to everyone's taste but can be had for low money. Motor's relatively cheap so find one with good paint, panel and interior and you're laughing. 6.9s are pricey to buy or fix, cheap ones are to be avoided.Originally posted by Forg View PostWhat's a big V8 Benz of that age worth?
