This is the reason why I had a lengthy discussion with a panel shop owner about repairing a car that I'd bingled once.

Sure, it could've been repaired satisfactorally, but he assured me (a mechanic) I'd be back every other week getting it spot-on. For the average car owner/user, the 20/20 (20m away, at 20km/h) rule usually applies, and everyone gets on with life.

Needless to say, we both came to the agreement that it was in everyone's best interest to push to have it written off

How many panels did they paint down the side peal looks bit dry but how does it compare with the other side?. I can sort of make out the black mark in the door it's a three layer colour so it's base colour ,pearl then clear working further out with each stage trouble is when doing it you have to be very careful that its has been colored and pearled is 100% mark free before applying the clear specially on such a light three layer colour . White pearls are the biggest cunt for this.

              Just saw this:http://www.goauto.com.au/mellor/mell...257CCB0024DD47
Cliffs, Mercedes claims cars repaired by non factory trained technicians using non genuine parts are unsafe. Naturally they're talking about Mercedes products specifically, but I know Audi used to refuse to supply parts to non authorised panel shops, especially with the A8.

Does the panel shop owner ever blink when you're in his presence?

Does he take a really deep breath before each sentence?

                Fucking wow...

                  Gassed,

Haven't read the whole saga, but i think your concerns are valid, that is shitfull workmanship. Having been though a shit fight with half arsed repairs before, with people that don't take pride in their workmanship, I believe you should be getting it back in a condition before it was damaged, or even better due to new parts and no wear, we are car enthusiasts, it would be sad if we didn't care about the appearance of our vehicles.

Ensure you have stayed in touch with insurance if you have not done so. I got bitten when a repair wasn't up to standard, and let the repairer sort it, second time it was still crap and called the insurance company. They said the repairer get another go at it because i didn't call them first.
                  yep

On the merc aftermarket thing, a lot of the aftermarket parts are actually lighter than the factory original one I have found. Though I have never used aftermarket parts on a merc, mainly jap crap.

A new car off the lot will generally be consistent, seals in correct place, and certainly no visible blends or imperfections. If you picked up your new car form the dealer with any of these issues, wouldn't you raise the concern? Its not to much to expect the same from a "professional" repair business, the "out of sight out of mind" mentality in my experience with repairers is rife.

I understand the repairers have a profit margin, and insurers try get the cheapest price that will give an acceptable result. I am sure a lot panel beaters and painters are capable of show quality work given the time, that's not expected on an every day car, but either is a quick and dirty fix and hope the customer doesn't pick up on it.

Going from them photo's. There is nothing wrong with the paint in that repair.

If panel shops are struggling, how can they afford exotic cars, gold plating, and dyno comp winning engine packages??? Sounds like a farce....
