Modern cruise control is, especially on electronic throttle cars.

Even the VS only overshoots as you crest a long hill (takes too long to stop accelerating), and that's not exactly "modern" ... and only one or two downhill spots on the Hume (or M1 to Newcastle) which have gravity overcoming wind-resistance and old-everything-that-moves resistance for it to creep over the set speed.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

the only reason most 2nd hand small cars DON'T have cruise control is because on those cars, its rarely available as an option all by itself... ie. you can't just pay $500 and get cruise control, you have to pay $2500 and get the "comfort pack" with cruise control, curtain airbags, a 5.1 premium sound package and my family stickers... if it were available on its own at the cash register on the way out of the dealer, i'm pretty sure more people would grab it.

you can always hear them when they break and they stop the engine immediately so you can't do any more damage.

Sweet. That answered it nicely. I've got 235s which pushes the indicated closer to the actual. So I reckon if I sit on 120 then I'll be close to about 115 actual.

For me, it helps keeps a consistent speed when travelling long distances and you don't wander over (or under) the limit by accident.

CSH on that front: I have a G-Force app on my phone which also shows your speed - all well and good, except that it was showing me doing anywhere between 220-250km/h when I was actually sitting with cruise control on at 110ish. Fair to say it's not that accurate...

Yup, so much amusement though. I love Gundagai to Yass personally :p
Cruise just makes getting booked something that happens to others + keeps my wallet and licence happy. I only have to consider cops when I'm on a mission to get away from fuckwits without cruise and am doing 140 +

Ironically my 16yo V8 Falcon sits on exactly the speed I set it, regardless of the incline or decline.
Current model Camry can gain as much as 10kmh downhill.

Not sure if its sure due to electronic throttle, less torque or both.

Set it to whatever with the same lever as the cruise control (toggles between cruise or limiter modes), and it just limits you to that speed. eg, set it to 60 around town, and once you get to that speed, you stop accelerating. Then bump it up to 80 or 100 when you hit the freeway. Can be set in 1 kmh increments, and changed in 1 or 10 kmh increments. (eg two bumps of the lever to change from 80 to 100.)

It feels a bit nanny state to start with, but it means (unlike cruise) that you can back off just by lifting whenever you want, rather than having to go for the brakes and deactivate it completely. It will actively slow you if you roll too fast down a steep hill. And if you want to override it, you just floor the accelerator pedal.
God yes, the frogbox has this and it's great, except being a manual transmission it won't hold it back on overrun. I use it all the time, only use cruise control on the highway. The new model has radar cruise so it will adjust it's speed to keep a safe distance from the car in front.

25 year old Celsior and cruise still works perfectly. None of this 10 k's variance.
Also the cruise in my Kenworth is very much appreciated....and then some.

my paj will vary more than 10km.. it doesnt have enought power to get up hills, and will run away once over them. rarely use it unless on a flat road.

current hybrid camry is about as good as it gets though

no matter how steep the hill on the way down it goes into regen and speed does not budge

i had the previous model hybrid and no regen so it'd run away down hill, but the current is ace, plenty of poke too...
