All the above, more so when you are already starting behind the 8 ball compared to a RB that you can simply screw some more boost into.Originally posted by Beavis View PostWhere does the L-series money go? Yep. Mainly because making an inefficient truck engine go fast takes a lot of $$ in parts and work. Got to change a lot more than an rb which is actually good from factoryOriginally posted by Beavis View PostWhere does the L-series money go? that's the polite way of saying they are a 50+yr old design, 2 valve, non-crossflow and shit if you're objective is power. Yes you can weird beard your way through L3.1 build and maybe maybe make 300+hp for 20k+ but that approach is simply not relative unless you have category rules to comply to. its also very irrelevant to the average MCM viewer.Originally posted by clutch-monkey View PostYep. I like my L24, makes the right noises and is enough for a stockish 240z but yeah if was going to build a car up.. would think hard about leaving it in or notOriginally posted by Walt KowalskiMemes are only detectable by NSA.

What the others have said.Originally posted by Beavis View PostWhere does the L-series money go? Are parts just that much more expensive, or there's boatloads of machine shop work, or..?
When I looked for a replacement race car for prodsports for my 240, and not wanting an MX5, first choice was to go to S14. Whilst it doesn't have the sound of an L series the SR does make good power relatively cheaply, and now the rules for 2B are freed up for turbos, with the bolt in aftermarket bits available the SR makes even more sense for bang for buck.
Even finding a good block is hard these days, and will cost you money to go through the usual 5 or 6 until you find one that will take the 3mm over bore my old motor had. Pistons in the freshen up had to be made, as the mistubishi pistons that were in it that had broken ring lands were no longer available.
Even simple things like lash pads are a pain in the arse to find, even in standard thickness.
If you want to have some fun, they are a simple motor that sounds good and can look cool with triples hanging off the side.
For racing, they are expensive to get decent power out of, when constrained by rules. The money spent by the serious guys in historic racing is frightening, but to play they have to pay.
So if your not constrained by rules, don't have a weird beard, then an RB is a no brainer.

They should be dropping a 1JZ in there instead. If you're going to upset the classic Datto purists, do it properly. oh, and make it auto bitches!
On the other hand, it does seem strange to have a cry about copping flack for deciding to butcher what they described themselves as an "absolutely superb and almost entirely original" example of "one of the most iconic JDM cars of all time". And a spiel about "fast food" modern stuff versus this "fine food" Zed. Next minute they're squeezing ketchup all over their sashimi and wondering why the chef is chasing them with a knife...

The other thing to consider from a TV show/ entertainment perspective is the time it takes to find all the right parts for the L series. I imagine your average mcm viewer wouldn’t be too fond of a project binky length build.Originally posted by PXL265 View PostWhat the others have said.

Also if they are going to build an L series might as well do it to make it a matching numbers car. They still need to get that engine in pieces back from the Australian government. Marty mentioned they will make the RB reversible so who knows maybe in 2,5,10 or 20 years they might do an L series build. But for now RB build will be interesting and still sound good.

There was a 1jz in HPi of similar back at the dawn of time (early 2000s) - I think it was owned by Ben Ellis? I wonder what happened to it.Originally posted by hrd View PostThey should be dropping a 1JZ in there instead. Seems when ever someone decides to replace the engine in an S30 you'll always get people calling it the end of the world. I recall on the Ratsun site one of the admin decided to use an LD28 block for his 240Z, everyone on that site reckoned it was great. The "purists" on another site thought he was the devil.
While ignoring the number of 240Z running SBC.
