The VX LS1 used in the R32 was indeed basically the same unit fitted to base Corvettes (Z06 got a slightly warmer "LS6" version of the LS1). Also fitted to the Camaro and Firebird although the top line got a version rated similar to the standard HSV LS1.
From what I recall over here they made about 230 rwhp stock in a VX SS. With bolt on's around 300rwhp. Heads and cam about 400rwhp depending on cam. US seems to dyno around 15-30 rwhp more for the same thing.
Americans do have cheaper access to LS1 engine bits then we do so that may also catch them out with the few thousand quoted for engine mods. I recently had some top end engine mods done using bits imported from the USA with some local parts. Including some nice extra bits its probably $2k worth of parts on my car but the SF guys could probably get away with around $1k worth.
However they were quite clear its a budget build with an unopened engine, at least at this point in time.
