I paid $2k for my last one with everything. They aren't worth much because the application is limited. Some cunt actually fitted a couple a few years ago and found out they weren't the strongest engine in the world and had high associated costs to fit so the shine went away. They are still a cool engine but you have to be realistic.Originally posted by Norbie View PostA 1GZ engine/trans package can be bought for $4k or less. Would a modern Merc V12 be anywhere near that affordable? I have no idea but my gut says no.David Fraser - Automotive Historian!

BMW can't make an I6 properly so a V12 is asking for grief. What's the Merc engine called?Originally posted by vet 180 View PostMerc V12 > BMW.
Look for a 5.5 twin turbo model from the early 2000’s if you want something on a budget. Will do 1000hp on stock bottom end no issues

From early to late
M120 6.0L n/a
M137 5.8L n/a
M275 5.5 twin turbo
I haven’t seen them in the flesh but they seem to use a lot of the v8 parts bin and the v8s are by all accounts pretty robust.
V12 prices seem to range between $3k and $8k. The little v8s are dirt cheap tho.Turns out, far too much has been written about great men and not nearly enough about morons

They had a long production run from 2003 so should be a few around. Only major issue I’m aware of is coil packs crap out and they’re an integrated setup, but 12 ls1 coils and aftermarket ecu would be a no brainer I’d imagine.Turns out, far too much has been written about great men and not nearly enough about morons

Yeah the coils are the weak link and serious coin if you buy Genuine MB.Originally posted by Jim View PostThey had a long production run from 2003 so should be a few around. The other weak link is the 5 speed auto once you start nodding them. In saying that 800whp through a 2.5 tonne car isn’t going to be easy on any box. But there is an after market and they can be made strong and they are the same as one of the Jeep boxes.
Always wanted to put into an old SL, but will never happen. The 6.0 is the pick of the bunch, but the 5.5 is stout, common and cheaper.

The 722.6 /NAG1 is a good box but they do wear out. Thankfully the common wear or faulty stuff is mega cheap. Conductor plate is $150, set of solenoids about the same, and the oil leaks into the connector plug is just an o ring.Turns out, far too much has been written about great men and not nearly enough about morons

What do you do with the auto box ECU wise? I'm assuming someone in the UK has some sort of box that can control it? From what I can see the autos are in a whole bunch of Chrysler's too.
Edit: while we're all on this subject, am taking suggestions for a Toyota to stuff said motor into. Current idea was for a MX73 (just want that velure interior) or maybe a MX32. Something of shitbox vintage preferably.

I have a spare NAG1 you can have cheap!
ECU is the problem. Compushift can allegedly do it, for $1800USD ($2995 direct here, apparently). I heard a rumour a guy in Finland or somewhere equally crazy was making another option.
Torqueflite is a direct fit to a 6.1 hemi that normally runs a NAG1. Does that mean they'd also bolt up to a Mercedes V12? Somehow doubt it, but it would be an interesting project at least.
