Ontario County Sheriff Phil Povero says it will take a while to complete the investigation into last weekend's fatal accident at the Canandaigua Motorsports Park. That was at a dirt track when a 20 year old driver, Kevin Ward Junior of Lewis County, was struck by another race car driven by NASCAR's Tony Stewart. It happened after Ward got out of his car and was walking along the track to confront Stewart as he drove by.
At a brief news conference on Tuesday, Povero did not give any indication of any criminal charges pending, but did say his staff still needs to work on this for at least another two weeks.
“Investigators continue to seek witnesses, gather evidence and develop the racetrack crash reconstruction. However it would be inappropriate to discuss details or findings of the investigation with the media at this time.”
Povero says when the investigation is completed, his investigators will meet with members of the Ontario County District Attorney's office to talk about all aspects of the investigation.

I think some people need to read this and just sit back for a bit

Totally. Widely applicable in the world of forumites.

All the numbnut muppets prepared to condemn/acquit with no real substance. Basically unless you have sat in and driven one of those cars you have no clue. And that goes for me. Even if you have driven one, you don't know the exact circumstances.

This is a life and tragically death circumstance. RIP.

          Leave it at that.

Hang on you just discussed it and in doing so broke the point of the article you just supported?

It's human nature to discuss things like this. If you don't like it then turn the internet off and do something else.

It is incredible that the big kick of the throttle that Mark didn't do meant that he just rolled on by the dead guy huh? How can you absolutely say that Stewart is innocent without any proof and when the vision shows him having a big stab on the gas that at least partly contributed to old mate getting cleaned up?
The retardedness of demanding how can people can say stuff without any proof then going full steam into a complete fabrication about what the vision shows is beyond belief. The vision does not show him having a big stab on the gas. That happens off camera, if it was in fact him. And you cannot see where his car was at the time. It's pure conjecture to say that contributed to old mate getting cleaned up. It could just as well have contributed to him almost missing the bloke instead of hitting him dead centre... that's pure conjecture. You can't tell from that crappy video.

But it IS stupid to get out and run onto a live racetrack in a fit of rage at another car that's not expecting you to be there doing stupid things, on a dimly lit track in a ninja suit. Especially over such an innocuous incident. That's not conjecture. Nor is it conjecture to say that without that retarded and pointless piece of road rage, it would never have happened. This is conjecture - in all likelihood, the young bloke wouldn't even give a fuck about the stack by now if he had just stayed in the car and got towed back to the pits like a rational human being. People crash out of almost every sprint car race I've ever seen. I bet a few days later its not even in their minds anymore. Just another crash at the speedway. And that's the big tragedy - it was over fucking nothing.

Well, it's good to see you've changed your mind since page 1. People talking about it on forums can have some positive effects.

Haha yeah well you got me there :D

I struggle to see how lots of people can craft a complex explanation to make the story sit better with them.

We will probably never find out what actually happened. No data logging (they say) and you can't trust the legal system there to provide any indication of what actually occurred..

We had crude logging in the mid 90s here in WA on sprintcars, so would think a guy who runs a decent sized team with top name drives in the US would've had some form of logging :w: Also apparently he is big on filming his runs but again not that race....

data logging is expressly forbidden in sprintcar racing...

My experience was in the mid 90s so a while ago but was basic rpm logging box run off a 9v battery (like I said very crude) in the early 90s, we only ran it a few time as was pretty useless, never hidden or caused issue with scruits at the time. Anyway stand corrected on data logging, thought they would have run something, I remember the overlay of info during incars with some of the WoO coverage on speed so just assumed they ran something these days.
