There was a 280zx running years ago in Vic by Michael Parker, comes up in a search on the IP forum under Bathurst results.

Yes saw that, would prefer a Z31 to be able to use a VQ Nissan engine. Anyway, have asked the question on the IPRA forum so we'll see.

If you're that desperate to run a 300ZX on a racetrack why not run as a production sports car? 2F technical regulations are broadly similar to IPRA and there's regular races in QLD and interstate, and the eligibility list simply states "Nissan 200SX, 300ZX, 350Z (all models)"

Prod Sports is hopeless for an older car and can be outright dangerous if you are trying to run against modern Ferraris, Porkers, Corvettes and so on. Being able to use a modern engine is the key to evening things out a bit, it's a pity that there is not a similar series to IP for sports cars.

The Jap equivalent to our Gazelle is group A Homoligated with VG 20 so you could run one with a VQ.

Gazelle probably makes more sense than a Z31 but I'm a confirmed Z tragic.

Not that you'd want to for weight reasons but can you run an MA70 supra in IPRA?

They were Group A racing cars in their time but are coupes. The Group A versions were considerably lighter than the road going counterparts.

3lt inline six so I guess you'd be stuck with a heavily restricted 2JZ as your best engine option if eligible?
Marvellous things so quickly get mundane

                  VG30E, in rally form.

Honestly, if you're new to the catagory, don't try and reinvent the wheel, or get them to bend the rules or whatever for you. It just pisses everyone off.

A speedway division I'm indirectly involved with is currently going through this with a rookie competitor who a) doesn't want to run the same fuel as everyone else, and b) wants the calender re-arranged to suit his lack of racing experience. The sooner he gets over it and moves on, the better.

Maybe I should just stick with the present V8 Zed if I want to race instead of sprint, deregister it, get a full cage and call it a Sports Sedan or something. Would not be competitive but at least would be lots of fun. Realistically one play car is enough, make some fancy Sports Sedan bodywork.

Why not the next generation 300ZX then? Got a decent engine in them, can fit decent rubber to them, surely they handle better than the Z31, and they're pretty cheap to get hold of (and look heaps better IMHO!)

I'd call this a realistic and smart option. Call it a sports sedan then there's minimal restrictions and you can do what you want to it as time and budget allows (or when you stop going faster, then you can add more fasts). Alternatively if you were racing CAMS events you could get it log booked as a 2A sports car and do whatever the hell you wanted as long as you kept the lights and 2 seats (chop the roof? no problem!); only problem is lack of other cars to race against, and the ones you WOULD race against would likely be purpose built sports-racing cars

Sport sedan or sportscar. My Z is semi mid mount V8 and can run either class. Can run over 6ltr in Sportscar.

Yeh, make the present V8 Zed look like a tough IMSA car, big wide wheels

Why don't you take your current car out to QR or Lakeside, buy their $200 Race licence, and run in Outlaws/Sports Sedans.
Laurie Watson runs his Magna, he's about your vintage. You'd have a ball running at the back of the pack wayching them.

If you like that, then buy a race car that can be raced anywhere in the country, CAMS PC lcence accquisition mght be an issue. Talk to Laurie.
if you get this far after reading the above, good on you!
If i make spelling mistakes, syntax errors, or just mss letters in words, it is because i am lw vision/vision impaired.
Dont drive or race no more. Bit of a cunt of a thing.

Its called Cone and Rod Dystrophy, un fixable, i get worse, its a hereditary cunt f a thing.

Jason. You just can't get over the fact that an old codger is a lot faster than you around Lakeside

But yeh, the QR series is of interest, other than that as long as I can run the car at sprint meetings or similar the class does not really bother me. Just as long as I don't get mixed in with modern big $ race cars.
