This. I am not concerned even a tiny bit.

I have seen a diesel astra run @3000-4000 rpm in 6th for over an hour on a hoist because some nugget accidentally locked out the ECU... thank god I was not involved in whatever nonsense was going on there, let alone having to explain 200km+ on the clock.
Run it in reverse to "erase" the kays, then proceed to kick the car off the hoist into the forest below.

so how do you go getting aussie only ecu updates/fixes, IE jeep etc that did different updates for aus market compared to other markets? or l/hd based workshop manuals where not everything is mirrored?

Software part numbers ordered from UK or US through a VPN? Doable for Volvo, not sure on others.

If you can't do a certain task then you send it to the dealer and charge the customer simple I see this happen a few times a year maybe with various different cars.

Also the SAE require dealers to hand over information after 5 years.

This whole story by Josh Dowling is a crock. Can he write anything worthwhile?

On another note is the cost of Australian car servicing. Rang around for oil and filter change first service for the Chrysler. I'd expect to pay $300 at the most. Worst quote was $498 and best was $450.

That's 6 litres of 15/40 oil, filter, workshop, labour and sundries charges. I took it to another brand dealership for just under $300.

Almost as much a joke as ADR's and new Porsche pricing in Australia.

Auto electrician fixed my relatives Hyundai after taking it to 3 dealerships, 1 of them simply admitted they didn't know what to do after a couple of weeks, problem was there was nobody around with enough training to have a clue, didn't help the service manual for that model was in Korean.
I've done some work doing new pre delivery detailing for one dealer, servicing was done nearby, all cars would pretty much get the shit thrashed out of them, new or used, unnescessary "test drives" were often taken too.
I guess if you want to keep your warranty you might be fucked, but can't really see the independent places having a problem fixing or servicing the vehicles unless it's high end stuff, as said they just buy the tools etc from a third party.
