Its interesting to see them out on the weekend driven by 20s demographic. Cars must be washed and polished before hand as they look showroom clean. Mine is lucky to get hosed down once every six months.
Yea ive seen your thread dude.. Youre the exception, not the rule..

You turned yours into a performance car - you liked it and you committed to making it into something pretty cool

Having said that I saw a supercharged one at the strip doing 15.2s @ 98ish mph.. felt sorry for the guy.. mustve been $50k into it

Isn't a supercharger for those a 8k drive in, drive out job these days?

TBH I see less P platers, more middle aged (both guys and girls) driving them around here..

All the young cunts have had to sell them because they can't afford the repayments on a 40k GTS 86 (with stupid bodykit) while working at Maccas and going to uni.

Yea that does make sense.. and definitely explains my dislike for 86s haha

Id actually like to see the stats one who bought the 86.. age and sex.. I always just think clueless mid 20s dude.. but have definitely seen middle aged people in them
They're generally purchased by people who prioritise handling and driver involvement over say power or luxury. Not surprising that there's quite a few older guys buying them as they're kind of the antithesis to the playstation cars which are so popular these days.

My wife has one and as much as I think it is a great package I get very frustrated driving it for more than an hour or two. Great handling but lack of performance drives me crazy. She loves it though.

Under steer is hitting the wall with your front end. Over steer is hitting the wall with your tail end. Horsepower if how fast you hit the wall. Torque is how much of the wall you take with you after you hit it.

if you want to go fast with lots of driver involvement, you'd be mad to go an 86 over a megane.

Id guess in that region.. 40k car + 8k blower + pipes + fuel sys? + rims.. 50k either way

Pfffft, that would be like 1% of owners. The majority buy it cos they want a respected "driver's car", but want the new car smell and are scared of a used car sending them bankrupt. That's why they're not buying a Boxster S when it's similar coin.

I think you're on to something there. I'd never considered that people prefer a new (or even near new) car to one thats 12 years old with some fundamental and very expensive to fix problems. Fuck me, do you have a newsletter I could subscribe to for more pearls of wisdom?

So should Toyota apologise for making a $30k RWD manual with 200hp that you can drive sideways everywhere?

The only thing you people are hating is the demographic/P plater demographic they were always going to attract, and the fact they're so common.

I moved to an 86 from a turbo 2.0 euro with a billiard table torque curve that was much faster everywhere, because driving that bored the hell out of me. 'Quick' and 'fun to drive' are not the same thing.

I actually think BreaksMyWallet is partially right, about the 1% thing at least.
Comparing new to old at the same price is never relevant, so the Boxster bit is way off mark; but because I don't believe many people are actually car enthusiasts (at best they're mostly "being seen in a car" enthusiasts), I do think most 86 buyers are wanting an inexpensive sporty-looking car regardless of driver involvement ... and if it didn't look like arse, they'd be better off in a Veloster.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

not at all, they've kept it cheap enough to be accessible even compared to mx5, chassis is good enough for drivers, and the power is low enough for hairdressers and women. it's managed to hit a few segments of buyers in one go = successful.
                            on the flipside:
V8 rx7 replacement suggested above, they'd sell maybe two of them lol.

what I'd like to know is how profitable the 86 has been for Toyota. I'd also like to know (the undefinable) the intangible value the 86 product has brought to the Toyota brand. The part where old mate 86 owner influences his GF to get a corolla over a mazda 3 or focus.

Btw 30 - 35k for a RWD, modern day NA s13 needs to commended not criticised for what its not.

15.2 ?? Aren't stock ones doing that. I think I did 12.9, getting ready for another stab at it.
