I think the sweet spot for caymans is the 987.2's with DFI (mid 09 on) which have 235w so yeah, very comfortable 13's. As for whether thats naff all power or a joke in one of the best handling chassis's at any price is up to the individual I guess.Originally posted by Captain_Slow View PostCayman S will do quarters in the 13s won't it? I guess in this age of sedans doing 11s it's not ultra fast but it's not too bad.

MX5s remind me of 250 motorbikes. You need to keep the mid corner speed up - there's not much urge out of corners. That's all fine on a track but not the safest on narrow twisty roads. And that engine... boat anchorOriginally posted by Captain_Slow View PostAs a two-week veteran of this MX5 caper, yes and no. No you don't think you need any more power when you're chucking it around suburbia in 50, 60 and 80 zones. Get out of the open road and it wouldn't go astray, and same goes for arriving at the next roundabout just a little quicker. In relation to mine I'd perhaps argue that it doesn't need more power so much as it needs to be freer-revving so I can get to the top end in a bigger hurry. Some low end torque would be good too; but I need to remind myself that I'm switching between this and a car with 530Nm so obviously apples aren't oranges.
Transformed by a simple low blow turbo kit.
Fiat will probably fit the 1.4 MultiAir engine to their version of the MX5. It's US compliant and comes in multiple outputs and they already fit it to a torque converter auto in the USA.

It's ok but the chassis is good enough to handle lots more. And it feels that way. So yeah realistically it's enough pace but you just feel like it could use more power regardlessOriginally posted by Captain_Slow View PostCayman S will do quarters in the 13s won't it? 1920's suspension Rustang also does well on race tracks.
These days, resorting to a "good Nurburgring time" for marketing means your car's a POS in the real world & has little to commend it.Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

Some people (myself included) just want a great handling car and couldn't give a crap about what it does down the 1/4. I'd love a Cayman S but its ability at traffic light drags or running the 1/4 wouldn't even get a mention. That said I drive an 86, so being slow in a straight line doesn't bother me.
Anyway, surely the best new RX7 would simply be a refresh of the S8 but without the rotor. Not like the exterior design needs any changes and the interior layout was pretty good. Just do updated plastics/gauges etc.

yes, that's what i'm saying. it's that kind of car. reminds me of an nsx in that way. all chassis, no power.Originally posted by blue_s15 View PostSome people (myself included) just want a great handling car and couldn't give a crap about what it does down the 1/4. This is where the Yanks win, light, powerful, reliable V8 engines that with modern technology are pretty fuel efficient too. Which is why blokes in the know like the idea of the RX7/LSx combo. Great chassis, great engine

Is there still seriously no simple bolt-on kits for the 86 to get a decent number, reliably? 180-200rwkw would be more than enough and from what I've read, would almost mandate a decent rubber upgrade? (Maybe even wheels too, for width?)
Having asked that... a warmer factory version has to be coming at some point.. surely..? I wouldn't care how it was done, ie; in what form... be it a bigger na subie engine (2.5/H6) or a toyota 4cyl + FI of some sort..
Having seen the success with the current 86 I reckon they would sell.
