Yes but petrol engines naturally use more fuel per km travelled so therefore more fuel will be consumed for the same journeys compared to a diesel and so more revenue for the govt.

No one seems to have addressed that trucks still use diesel and the diesel vehicles often drive better (more torque low down) than (non-turbo) petrol cars.

Mercedes said a few years ago that within ten years it will be very hard to get diesels to meet emission standards, and were looking at alternatives (like combined compression and ignition petrol engines.)
Fiat group abandoned all diesel development a few years ago also.

That's the US, and iirc was only applicable to passenger cars, not SUVs/Trucks.

Applicable to all vehicles now and is determined by its footprint.

I had a feeling it was on all vehicles, hence the V6 ecoboost F series, V6 diesel rams etc in pickups and the high efficiency semis.

And the reason why the 2015 F150 is now only slightly heavier than a Ranger.

Getting diesel engines to meet emissions is a nightmare for both the manufacturer and the consumer.
You now have engines with a whole heap of expensive exhaust after-treatment's bolted on being fed urea with sophisticated EGR and computer management just to make the shit coming out of the exhaust meet a standard.
Mazda fucked off the Rotary because it was shithouse on fuel, emissions and reliability and it seems diesel engines for light vehicles are headed the same way.
