Diesel Particulate Filter. Section in the exhaust that essentially stores the visible soot in the exhaust, then burns it off at very high temperature every once in a while. Cars that don't get enough high speed running have issues with never doing the regeneration burn, which then blocks the DPF. Worst case scenario is that it has to be replaced, at vast expense.

can get focus XR5's and all the usual hot hatch suspects <$15k. would be much better than a yawnmobile golf.

im going to get flamed for this, but the dodge caliber's came with the volkswagen 2L diesel, in manual only.

calibers were a good roomy, reliable machine. pretty funky design at that too. well worth a look. the petrols are the same as mitsubishi lancer/some hyundais too.. so not a bad thing. cant remember if the petrols came in manual though. all the ones i drove had uber gay CVT box.

edit: calibers do ok roll backs too :D

My advice is get a wagon, they are the shit when you have a kid. Easy to get the pram in the back cause you don't have to lift it as high, plus you still have room for all the groceries.
And get something jap, or a Hyundai.

I own one of these diesel things, an 05 MKV TDI. I wouldn't give two fucks about the later stuff, the dpf will make your cry and then these always the looming spectre of the DSG shitting itself. And the same with the air, thats a 2.5K job, but they don't seem to go every 5 minutes like Ef falcons do.

The earlier MKV's seem to be better, later stuff with the peizo injectors took a noticeable downturn in quality, both actual and perceived.

If you're buying new, keep it for the warranty then fuck it off. If buying used, buy a Jap car. If you want a project which you're always fixing niggly shit but the main bits live forever and you can push over trees with it buy Aussie made.

I'd probably look a a used dunnydoor or territory if it was me, petrol and use the change to keep fuel up to it.

A good drive every couple of weeks is all you need, my thing does 50km a day with the odd high speed run out of town and it's had no issues, I know it's done regens because Citroen turn the window and mirror demisters on during the regen cycle.

Seriously, buy a mid sized korean or japanese petrol engined hatch. You will get the best reliability/service life/running cost compromise. You don't need expensive time consuming dramas or a car that eats brake rotors and other unnecessarily expensive bits.

I had a 2010 103TDI DSG -- fantastic thing except for the gearbox. Fucking DSG.

Oh yeah, base of the back seat is a tiny bit short for some baby seats so check that if relevant.

The car will absolutely be manual. Neither her nor I will drive an auto ( current ke70 piece of shit project excepted due to my Bing leg lol) so day costs are not an issue.

She won't drive anything bigger than this style so cheap big aus cars are not viable. She will be driving this 80% of the time.

She usually travels about 100 a day highway miles for work. I don't like her doing it in a small pissy "run about " car but she has always refused anything more suitable. So somwthiing that is stable and capable at highway speed and around trucks is important as the 121 is fucking shit ... Along with every small can I've ever driven.

So What ever we look at has to be in that size range and capability from my point of view, as boring and non Pf as that might be lol

Are dealer warantees worth a spit ?

Also, whatever car you choose, check out where the Anchorage points are for the Baby Seats... If its on the rear of the seat, all good, same as on the floor directly behind the seats. But if its on the floor at the very back.. (Where the Tailgate closes), its a bloody pain getting things in and out of the back. One of the things I hate in my Mitsu Colt.... And I have 2 baby seats in there.
The mounts on the roof aren't bad, but mostly forund in wagons.

If its ISOFIX... No issues at all... If you have the right seat.
