Not sure these laws were to protect manufacturers; they were & are more about giving an importing company surety that if they spend all the moulah required creating all the support required (for Australians who buy new cars to be able to have those cars maintained & repaired), they've got all the buyers of that brand/model rather than being undercut by importers who spend nothing & send the car via email.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.
25 year rule, and SEVS and all the BS and costs that go with getting a grey import on the road here were all about protecting profits for Toyota/Ford/Nissan etc local arms, all of which could quite easily have been negated by a simple block on imports for models while currently on sale here.
And shit like mandatory replacement of cats and tyres on a vehicle that has done 40,000km? really?
