Dealers won't refuse to service them, they'll take money off you for that no problem. New car warranty is the grey area.

So......what's the go with SEVS etc? Will the process change for adding cars to their lists, and will the pre 1989 rule ever change? Surely you would think it would move each year we progress into the future...

That's what I don't understand, nobody's going to import some shit heap from overseas if it's 10-15 years old unless it's a sports car or something rare/ unusual etc. Does the government think we're queing up to bring over a 1998 AE111 Corolla or something?

Average fleet age in NZ has been on the rise for 8yrs. Older than Australia.
They opened the floodgates to grey imports nearly 25 years ago.
THEN is when you need to compare to now. They were nearly at 20 years for the average age. Thatlinked PDF doesn't go back anywhere near far enough.

It would be far too sensible a thing, for them to actually do it. Or as I see it, they'll up the associated taxes along with it.

Surely it would have to be capped, also.

I know everyone else on PF is buying $300k+ cars ... but for people like me who aren't ever going to be able to afford that, the result of this change would be "meh".

I think the only real game changer would be if they opened it up to LHD cars.

No one has mentioned options either. For example lower spec (eg engine) cars sold in Australia compared to Japan, Europe or US.

                  Manual US-spec M5s FTW.

Not necessarily STi Forester can't be imported through SEVS because the Forester was already brought in by Subaru but never in STi spec which changes just about everything on the car (Engine, Gearbox, Brakes, Suspension, Interior, Exterior Bodykit, Wheels). 3-Door Prado, Toyota Altezza (different engine, gearbox and diff to what was sold here) all caught in the same boat.

Jap spec LC70 with petrol V6 - $35k! How does a diesel engine increase its cost by double?
