If you don't have one, $12k off the import-cost all of a sudden might make it worth a trip to Japan so you can check whether it's a POS at the source.
    Are R32 GTR's shit, or are trashed R32 GTR's with speedo's wound-back 100k kms a few times shit?
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

Their business is still protected. Anything over 12months old or 500kms on the clock, up to 25 years old, is their territory, that's a pretty big scope.
Jaguar XJR, Freelander 2 HSE, Jaguar XKR, MINI Cooper S

Good luck finding a good one. Americans can now import them and are snapping them up, and are driving prices up.

          Ah well, wasn't really serious.
I'll bet it's going to be a similar problem getting hold of a Cosworth by 2018, too.
There may be other interesting cars nobody had ever considered before. Wonder what an ?E24? M6 is worth? Do they have assplodey engines like the E34 M5's?

              Under a year & 500km old?
Add GST & LCT & import duties, don't know if you're getting a GTR any cheaper than Nissan Oz will sell you one with warranty.
There's no way they'd let the LCT slide on a "new" grey import unless they were also axing LCT on new cars sold here.

Worse - M88/3 which the E34 M5 engine is based off (M1, E24/E28/E30/E34 M cars all used variants of the original M88 in-line six).

                And E24s rust.

The thing is that it gives people choice and manufacturers to also drop cost by losing the "Australian destination pack" they would otherwise have to develop, test and implement at the factory.

I know this is the theory, but if you do a price comparo & remove GST/LCT/stamp-duty/rego from the cost of cars OS the only place they're generally cheaper is the USA.
So if grey-imported cars are no cheaper than black-imported ones, why would the black importers drop their prices?
OK there are exceptions, but some of those exceptions are things like Cayman GT4's - where Australians paid probably about AU$20k than Soap Dodgers, but that also seems to have meant that more Australians got a chance at owning one ... ie. good luck getting a GT4 from the UK at AU$20k less than a new one here!

I think it might offer some protection going forward though, and reduce the future incentive for "black importers" to ream us.

Now THAT is a very interesting politically-related factoid, and one which could affect this little black duck's vote in future (if true).

                      quick maths

buy price is 100k in japan - 5% consumption tax

so we are starting with 95k
                      2k to ship in style
                      lct 11.5k
                      gst 10%, importr duty 5% and rego 3%= 18% so 19k

                      so 106k +19k on road

                      $125

                      fuck you exchange rate

                      nissan sell them for 190k

                      no saving there at all

                        Really? That's quite a saving...

                        EDIT

And I suppose any factory warranty goes out the window when you start modding it, so no great loss...

Nissan website says GTR from 10,587,240, which is AU$130k ... ?

This might be a dumb question, but doesn't LCT apply only to brand spankers over $60k?

Nope, imports of any kind with a value above the threshold attract LCT.
