In the manual it said because heat to both could send you to sleep.
But don't think I've ever seen any other car with that? Certainly no modern cars.
It's much more common that you think. In new and old. Not sure about the sleep thing though.

    Personal examples:

All my BMWs (E36, E46, E91 so fairly modern) have done the same thing in effect with their climate control - when heating if you have the dial centred and it's cold outside and in the car. Heat at the feet, cool air at the upper vents. And quite noticeably.

VL turbo had the same thing. It was marked "Bi Level" in some I think

      ^ Check those funky 80's high-heeled ankle-height boots!
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

Your e46 wont heat your feet and the middle vents at the same time? Im positive mine does, i know my e90 does for sure as thats my default setting during winter.

Maybe you are confused with the automatic climate control function? Itll turn off vents and even allow cool air trying to keep the cabin temp balanced at what its set to. Same thing with aircon. Itll close vents randomly when its cold enough.

Yes that's the climate control. It will definitely do both sometimes. Just not all the time. Also depends on where you have the warm/cool wheel. So in winter I have it more towards warm and in summer it's on full cool of course. So in answer to the original question it's in no way unique to have cool in the upper vents and warm below. If anything I though it was a comfort thing letting the warm air rise rather than blowing it straight at you.

Because 4x4-ers do everything the hard way.

I.e. going from point A to point D via the most torn up tracks with the deepest bog holes with $10K of recovery gear.

Cost id dare say. And they sell well enough with out, so they dont bother. Allthough if one started, the others would probably follow suit.
Also the frequency people turf the standard to run aftermarket wheels and the retro fit of compressors possibly makes manufacturers see it as an unnecessary addition.

The systems are expensive and can be troublesome if not maintained properly.

Because the CTIS system in the hummers holds air as reliably as a popped balloon.

Why do people remove front seat head rests/restraints? Driver and passenger. Saw two today in quick succession. First was a Territory with a big islander type bloke and his (also big) missus. Second was an i40 or similar with an oldish (50-60) couple.

You see that in movies and TV, I imagine for filming purposes.

Presumably they like high spinal injuries.

Used to work on a couple of cars for a particular family, and they'd just get yanked out by the kids and lost. Obviously, the importance of headrests was lost on them too.

Headrests on modern cars are slot more angled forward/upright, people pull them out so they can lean their head back further.
