    Anyone driven a SMG in a non-M3 BMW E46? There's one in 330i I was wondering what it be like. Good thing or useless?

    The non-M3 SMG is a ZF gearbox and it is different to the SMG Getrag in the M3.

      Probably had the gererator die and the battery just went flat.
      Had the alternator die on my old Triumph and because the charge light was blown didn't know about it until the car wouldn't start.

        Of course! Because I was actually the mechanic in a shop specialising in bloody Morris Minors and Mini's at the time I wouldn't know whether it was the generator or the battery that had failed..........

            Technically the non M3 SMG is really called an SSG. It's more like the SMG I from the E36. Only two modes manual and auto. The M3 SMG is a Siemens design. The SSG is Magneti Marelli.

            Have read reports they are less reliable but they are pretty rare.

            I'd probably steer clear (and I have a M3 SMG which touch wood runs just fine)

              How does a car with a June 2016 build date end up with a compliance date of December 2017 ie nearly 18 months later? It's a BMW so usually there's a few months delay but this one must have been sitting around for more than a year in an undrivable state. It was first registered in January 2018.

              Maybe sitting in the showroom for an extended period for people to sit in but not drive?

                Thanks re SSG. I was wondering whether SSG could be a better option than the steptronic where auto is a requirement eg nopics preference.

                Many years ago during the early 1990s recession when new cars were sitting around a long time unsold, I recall some controversy where manufacturers had fitted updated compliance plates. It seems that compliance plates were nothing like a build plate just the car was compliant at the date the new plate said. No idea if there's been any las that stop this practice.

                  This is the proper Australian compliance plate and the build date is the real factory date as recorded in all the BMW VIN lookups. I doubt anyone like BMW Australia would be shonking compliance plates - not even plates any more - they're stickers.

                  One thing I can tell you about the SMG auto mode is that it's mostly shit. There are 5 modes vs the 1 in SSG. D1 starts in second gear (for slippery conditions) and slips the clutch a fair bit. D2/D3 are kind of the main usable ones but change gear too slow and do so at bad times e.g. in the middle of intersection it tries to change from 1st to 2nd leaving you free wheeling with no drive. Fucking annoying. Getting up to D4/D5 it changes faster but then holds gears too long so 60km/h and you're sitting in 3rd and as soon as you bump it up (or down) a gear, it changes permanently in to manual mode. It doesn't quite drive like an auto and it's very rare I ever do even when in traffic or something. I'd expect the SSG to do something similar. Definitely give it a good drive if you need the auto mode.

                  I'd take the auto anyday I think. Pretty sure they're ZFs. Just watch the fluid on higher mileage ones. They claim "lifetime fill" which is asking for trouble.

                    They should, but make sure it has overvoltage and undervoltage protections. Lithium Ion batteries do not like to be overcharged, floated, or undercharged, and prefer to sit at 20-80% capacity for best life.

                    If the overcharge mechanism simply drops the battery from the circuit, be aware the alternator could then theoretically send a large voltage spike through your car's systems.

                    Some good reading at nordkyn design website. It's more about lithium, alternators and boats but the concept is similar.

                    The advantage of lithium is you can pull full current to start your car even at 20% charge, they are remarkable.

                      The compliance plate is fitted when it leaves a approved holding yard, this can be the docks, a storage yard or even ford/holden factories back in the day. Unsure about cars but with other products there is money thats needed to be paid to government before you can unload it, then more money required before you can release it. IT could have been a car a customer ordered then for what ever reason cancelled, or a stock car BMW thought they could sell

                        Yeah I can't see BMW pulling a shonk ... it's not VW after all Just highlighting the disconnect between compliance and build dates which you'd be aware of.

                        Thanks. Just wonderng what they were like. I've change the filter and fluid on my ZF auto twice now. I took a 335i DCT for a spin and quite liked that.

                              Looks like a good unit, you might want the 650 version of that battery as the one linked is only for engines up to 1.5L.

                                What's the deal with rego and moving from QLD to NSW. Can't find anything about stamp duty?
                                Assume the owner is moving from QLD to NSW rather than buying and transferring rego (which is all every shit website talks about).
