    reliable compared to what?

VW club? the GTI and R have turbo issues, water pump issues, tensioner issues
French opposition have really crap interiors and cheap plastics that make them really crap
Japs are non existent bar the WRX WRX/STI

Literally if I'd be blowing 60k on a car now I'd only have two choices .... STI or RS, and I think i'll grab the STI come end of year simply because the EJ has been around for years and everybody knows them, these new engines ....

STI is pretty archaic; choosing an old-fashioned brand-new performance car because of reliability seems an odd choice.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

I'll be making this decision next year and can see the issues. The STI is really just ancient, not huge power and they use a fuckload of fuel to make it, I don't think I could actually buy one but can see the appeal on a reliability basis. The Golf R is just dull, likely long term reliability is an issue and there's about three in my street. Focus RS looks like a reasonable option but then you have to deal with Ford dealers and service.

The big question I have is whether it's worth the $30-40k extra to go with an A45 or M2. Probably not, but at least the dealer experience is a bit better (probably not $30-40k better, but still). Part of me wants an Audi S1 just because they look hilarious.

Mr Purple, what's the negative about Ford dealers? I talk to mine maybe once or twice a year and they're fine....they don't have a "free" tray of cocaine and a Ukranian prostitute ready for me like a Merc dealer would, but you also have some money left after buying & servicing the car.

It'll be exactly like Holden dealers.
When, many moons ago, I got the Subaru serviced by a Subaru dealer, when it came back it was clean & complete & they'd obviously lightly air-freshener'd it too.
When the local Holden dealer serviced the Commode, I had to attach the steering-column cover properly (it was scraping on the back of the wheel), I had to attach the tailgate striker-cover (they'd just left it sitting in the boot), and at least most of the boot-scuffs cleaned off the door-trim.
Additionally I've now taken it to the guy I actually trust, not only did it come back clean but he only charged me about the same as the Holden "capped price servicing", which included an apology about the price if the oil because Holden specifies an expensive oil. So even the "capped price servicing" thing is a bit of a scam.

Compare this to taking your 7yo IS250 to the Lexus dealer that's been servicing it since you bought it, because of all the engine tappy/grindey noises it made before it stopped, it turns out that it dropped a valve & needs lots of new/rebuildy work, but because you're a loyal customer you only have to pay $400.

Yeah. Bought it through my fleet company so I expect there's some sort of volume discount in there given it's under list.

Strangely enough, Forg's explained my problem as above.

We have a 6 year old IS250 and the services are affordable, they pick it up and drop it off again and offer you a coffee and water if you wait. In contrast whenever I take my 86 in for a service I either have to book in a courtesy car six weeks in advance or catch the bus, and wait in a queue of white 4WDs for 20-30 minutes while dropping it off. And every time I service it they fuck something up. It's not just Toyota either, VW did the same, and Skoda once charged me $1100 for a basic service and broke an intake hose while doing it, without telling me.

Ford do they courtesy car now, I understand, but the problem with dealing with dealers who sell a lot of cheaper cars is that they really don't give a fuck for service or my convenience. So spending the extra for a Lexus/Merc/BMW is worth it for that alone, even if it's not worth the 50% premium.

Pay to play. Which shouldn't be a problem here since the average income is $150k on here.

I've got 2 Fords, never had a bad experience with my dealer. I drop them off, and they either get the reception girl to drop me back at home & pick me up when it's ready, or give me a free loan car. Services are like $300 and I've never waited long enough to need a coffee...it's a 5 minute job.

One time I went to Lakeside on the Sunday & had this weird burning smell later in the day. Was shitting myself thinking I'd fucked something so I ran it up to the dealer on the Monday morning and it turned out a plastic bag had just wrapped itself around the cat. They cleaned it all up for me and didn't charge me.

I dunno, paying an extra $40k for an A45 (which is supposedly not as good to steer) for a 'free' coffee once every 6 months seems like false economy to me

A45s seem to be around 65% retained value after 3yrs

Mk2 Focus RS seems to be around 60% after 6 years

Mk3 Focus RS seems to be 120% of RRP at this stage

                            ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You're probably right, which is why I'm still undecided! That $30-40k difference also buys me a 7AGTE for my MR2 plus an extra 100-200hp in the Valiant, which is my problem as well.

Strangely enough, with the older cars I'm quite happy to take them halfway across town to be worked on by some unreliable older guy in a shed, I just want one car where I don't have to think about servicing too much!

My cousins A45 does. 3 or 4 rolling starts and 5 or 6 big launches against my RS 265 must have got it warm as it wouldn't engage launch control for 10 mins or so after that. Levelled the playing field somewhat although the A45 still got the better of the little frog as you would expect.
