Most guys for some reason have an incredibly deluded idea of high speed. "I was doing 220 down the main drag" blah blah blah....

The seem to regard speedos as an actual measurement of real speed etc etc. ie. "My Escort does 220kph all day, it was off the clock!". Which I suppose is 185 or so on a good day...

I thought it was just young fuckers with no real experiences to speak off so some exaggeration, but I have realised in recent years that docile old fuckers also quite often live in an imaginary world. Bit sad.

Bloke was filling up his MkV Golf diesel with the high flow truck nozzle, reckoned the diesel from that pump was specially made for trucks. Claimed his Golf gets 100mpg and do 200+ by only using truck diesel. Funny thing was, I was using the normal nozzle from the same bloody pump. He was adamant only the high flow nozzle has the special diesel.

A mate of jimmyGs apparently had a freak XE 4sp that ran low 13s or some crap and wound off the clock at 250kmh lol.

I didn't want to say anything before, but...

I had an XD 4-speed 351 Clevo that ran a flat 14 (at Ravenswood), and off the clock was not a problem, the speedo only went up to 200kmh LOL

But it would rev out to 6300rpm in 4th, with a 2.92 diff that made for a very interesting calculation.

225/60R15 = 2044mm circumference (0.002044km)

engine rpm * gear ratio / diff ratio * tyre circ (km) = kms per minute, times 60 to conver to km/h

6300 * 1 / 2.92 * 0.002044 * 60 = 264.6kmh

Back when the Kwinana Freeway still had traffic lights on it....

I spent $10k getting that engine built in 1998, not counting the Yella Terra heads the previous owner had fitted. From memory it made 282hp at the wheels.

With a close-ratio single rail the gearing was ridiculous, it would do 95 in 1st, 135 in 2nd, 185 in 3rd and 4th well that was up to the maths...

It took a loooooong time to get up there LOL. It had an Autometer tacho so I'm fairly confident the rpm indication was accurate.
