There is a brown JD wagon that competes in the motorkhanas.
It has a supercharged Family II engine and rusted out front guards from all the stones it spits up.
Goes OK (would not be seen dead in it).

Yep similar scenario. To work on old cars you need old equipment, and keeping that equipment going is a job in itself.

As an example, I recently got my hands on an old Genrad GDS3500 otherwise known as WDS.



They were made in 1997 or so, it's a touchscreen tablet PC running Windows 98, with a built-in multiplexer for the OBD and other test cables. This is one of the old Ford, Mazda, Jaguar and Aston Martin dealer diagnostic machines which were used from 1997 to 2007. There's a handful of people who are into keeping these things running. It's so old-tech it's hilarious. But it works and there are some things that it can do, which the newer devices cannot.

(Also now a rare sight: anything other than an SUV at school pickup. There was my 86, that Monaro, and SUVs as far as the eye could see...)
