My Dad ordered a brand new SD1 in the UK where we lived. Broke down on the way home from the dealership! :D"If you can make black marks on a straight from the time you turn out of a corner until the braking point of the next turn, then you have enough horsepower." - Mark Donahue Penske Porsche 917

I havent read the Mclaren article yet.. but i dont see why you cant image the hard drive of it onto a more modern computer / keep it as backup?Originally posted by Jack Nicholson View PostYep similar scenario. To work on old cars you need old equipment, and keeping that equipment going is a job in itself.
As an example, I recently got my hands on an old Genrad GDS3500 otherwise known as WDS.

They were made in 1997 or so, it's a touchscreen tablet PC running Windows 98, with a built-in multiplexer for the OBD and other test cables. This is one of the old Ford, Mazda, Jaguar and Aston Martin dealer diagnostic machines which were used from 1997 to 2007. There's a handful of people who are into keeping these things running. It's so old-tech it's hilarious. But it works and there are some things that it can do, which the newer devices cannot.
Thanks! It's something I am doing on the side.
Its a PC with some add ons? Im guessing via a serial port?

Are you asking about the McLaren laptop or the WDS in my pic?
Regarding the McLaren from what I can tell it's not the actual laptop which is the big deal, it's the CA Card which was put in it, it has a bespoke custom-made interface card to talk to the ECU, not an off-the-shelf piece of hardware. I do find it hard to believe they have only one, they probably have a couple more locked in a safe somewhere.
With the WDS the multiplexer where the OBD cable (plus the various other cables for voltage, current, pressure and others) is actually integrated into the motherboard itself so it's not really feasible to incorporate it into another PC, but fortunately several thousand of the WDS units were built so salvaging from other units is still an option. The software is no problem, actually it's quite common to put in a new hard drive and make a new installation (I myself have all the software and ghost discs for reinstallation).

I suppose with enough time and money anything is possible but it's not worth investing big money into reproducing these parts.Jaguar XJR, Freelander 2 HSE, Jaguar XKR, MINI Cooper S
