    wat mods first?

Hi again PF friends, i come about again posting due to my lack of mechanical knowledge, hehe. (nice sentence hey)..
Here is my question.. I want to mod up my celica which i have been driving for the past few weeks, okay and plz dont mention anything about rice boy stickers or neons or watever it really isn't funny anymore. That said, i want to do the cheapest mods while having a significant affect on the performance of the car first. Wat i need is some advice on wat to go about first.

You COULD go the intake, headers, exhaust route, but by the time you have spent all those thousands of $$, you could have bought a car with more potential.
Besides even with I/H/E on the celica it still wont be a signficantly faster car.

    * alternatively, drop a better engine in.

would i be able to just do a turbo modification on it?

a custom turbo kit would involve lots of hassles and lots of $$. also not sure if your engine would take well to turboing.

a 3sgte conversion would also involve lots of $$$, but if it worked out in the end, you would be driving a pretty wild car.
Also, so much power in a FWD car = a wild ride....hehe

I wonder if you could strap a 4AGZE supercharger on it..

Isn't the engine you have now a 3sge?

If that's the case, then it probably wouldn't be tooooo much hassle to fit the 3sgte...

In fact, I think i saw some australian sites that sell conversion kits.

If you will eventually do a conversion... spend the money now on mods that you can port over.. i.e. engine management, intake, and even cat-back exhaust erring on the side of a bit large in prep.

3sgte is pretty much a straight drop, though there are new mounts etc that need to put in place *obviously*... in your model celica you have the poxy Camry 3SFE engine *cringe* ... for you my friend, extractors & cold air = waste of money

as for a 4azge, who would want one of those poxy, shit slow & old engines when you could have the beasty 3sgte

i mean everyone knows 3sgte & 2jz's are the best engines ever made by Toyota

My engine is currently the 5SFE, I have seen some sites that do have turbo kits. But to do that would I need to change my exhaust and intake anyway?
If so then I guess its going to cost nearly as much as a engine swap.

okay, my first sensible answer in weeks!!

before you even open the bonnet, you should do the suspension and brakes first.

a decent set of slightly lowered springs from king or lovells, some good heavy duty shocks and heavier sway bars. this should set you back around a grand if you fit it yourself, and prob another $300 to have a mech fit it.

then give it the best set of tyres you can afford. tyres and suspension make for a faster car cheaper than engine upgrades will, unless your into *yawn* drag racing.

then look at upgrading the brakes, there should be a few options around.

if you get more go out of the motor before you do the brakes and suspension you'll find it very easy to fall off the road. you dont realise how crap stock stuff is until you up the output even by 20kw's.

then look at doing engine mods. it'll be a pretty sweet thing to drive once you've done all that, even before opening the bonnet!

Here here, Listen to Secoh. You're better off making it turn and stop before engine upgrades.

With a brake upgrade you could look into get DBA discs but alternately with good brakepads and good fluid you should be able to get a good improvement over stock, at least in how much fade will occur, very important for driving up mountains when you run into a corner and run out of talent.

Secoh's advice is gold. However, figure out why you want to mod your car, and what you want to get out of it - do you want it faster in a straight line, quicker through corners, capable when taken to the track on a weekend, looking 'sick,' sounding 'sick' or with a 'sick' stereo?

all 6 categories cost more money than you'll ever see back from it. Consider it the price you pay to get a car the way you want it, because every cent you put into modding a car will somehow go missing when it comes time to sell it. With that in mind, decide what you want out of a car and if *this* is the car you want to base that idea on. Wise advice is to save your pennies for worthwhile mods on a decent car rather than flipping coin down the drain on a set of wheels, f'rinstance

in your case - if you love the celica shape/car so much, and want something solid out of it - consider saving for a GT4 rather than spending on this one. it's an infinitely more economical choice, and if you spend the years saving for it you'll be really sure that you want it when it comes time to drop some clams on it.

don't mod for the sake of modding, and don't mod for the sake of having a 'sick' car. At least, don't come on performanceforums with that talk, i hear fast fours and hot4's have webboards for those kind of people
