There’s one petrol one for sale in the whole of NSW. Fucks sake...

Sv8. No, not hand wagoning... I actually have a VZ sv8 manual. Now since it don't have a tow bar I guess I can't offer real experience, but for cheap and fixable car they good, not refined though. I recon it would tow well, up to the 2tonne mark anyways.
In the real world I towed race car (1900kg on trailer) around with our 4L petrol territory a fair bit. Rock solid and easy to get in your price range. Ours was 6speed zf awd. I hate the driving on converter feel of old 4 speed slushers, so that was only choice for me. But yeah, paid the mandatory fint and rear suspension rebuild tax that goes with the territory.
Best suggestion so far is bf wagon. No suspension issues, dirt cheap, live axle, leaf springs and LWB. Trans are horrible, but cheap...
Towed mates car in big enclosed trailer across Australia last year with 4L petrol manual Navara. Very stable and comfortable, good suspension for a ute. Make sure you have a coil pack replacement budget though... Don't rate the motor as much as a falcon donk either for towing. He paid around 10k for it with just over 100k on the clock.

I'm really keen to hear why you think they are so nasty to operate

how many have you driven - how long have you owned one for ??
This is the 5th SWB Pajero I have had, granted - it is the first 4th Gen model I've had, but bought it in 2009 with 53,000km currently has about 240,000km

The SWB (in the 4th Generation) was only available from 2007 - 2009 - They are the NS and NT series and has the 3.8L V6 Mivec and are the pick of the bunch
Prior to that - Aust never got the 3rd Generaton (2000 - 2006 - NM - NP series) in SWB - only the LWB
The 2nd Generation are still pretty good for towing - (NH - NL series 1991 - 1999 but they all had the 3.0L V6 until the Latest NL model that had the 3.5L that was about 150kW from memory..
The first Gen - 1983 to 1990 - Forget about it - It was only available in 2.6L Astron 4Cyl as a SWB - The V6 was LWB only.

If you find a Good condition NL series 3.5L - that will do the trick and easily be under $10K
The bonus is they are available in Manual and Auto - Like this one

If you find one you are interested in - More than happy to come and check it out for you.... - can even get my mechanic to check it out too - he is a Pajero Guru..

            Exactly, thankyou.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

You havent driven a hilux since the 90s have you? The 2005- ones are as comfortable as a falcon wagon, without the poorly engineered front end, rust and fucked interior.

Horse and cart rear end = perfect for towing
              V6 motors havexplentt of poke
              Modern interior so comfortable
Tray/tub to throw shit in the back.

              Sounds perfect to me.

How many tool boxes and tyres can you fit in the back of a swb pajero? :knock:

Dude, he's not looking at buying a crapped-out Falcon 500 with 25 years since the suspension had any maintenance ...

                  you can get 5 265/60R18's or 4 33x12.5R15's
if you pull the rear seats out, you have a 1.3M long by 1.0M wide by 1.4M high box to fit stuff in..
                  With seat in - it drops to 90cm x 1m x 1.4m

He has been considering BF wagons, so i beg to differ.

Not bad, but still no duel cab tub/tray. And fatboy mentioned kids, so depending on their age, they might be in kids seats, which makes removing/folding seats a fucking pita.

I hate duel cabs, but their versatility is hard to beat in this situation.

The 2005 2.7 Hilux we've used here is noticeable less comfortable than the earlier Japanese ones, must have no decent ride/handling engineers in Thailand - and doesn't say much for the aussie ones if the Falcon is as bad. The 3.5 might be better, but need to be a bit careful with load distribution on the trailer too, had a few hairy moments. Lack of lsd on slimy driveways moving cars let alone boats on algae covered boat ramps might put me off too.
