Anyway look at it this way hit accelerator in neutral rev it to 6 grand say take foot off. then do it in 4th. Your motor will still try and deaccelerate at the same rate. The amount it can successively do this would be related to the torque curve I'd imagine.
It wouldn't follow the torque curve. Engine braking is a function of mechanical friction, pumping losses, and the irreversiblity of compression.
The torque curve is a function of these and more.

Besides, who wants to use a braking system that varies depending on what gear you are in? You'd have to have a different braking split for each gear to achieve ideal braking.

Engine braking is more of an inconvenient side effect than a brake aid (unless your braking split is too far forward).

And for the be all and end all to this discussion, go play Gran Turismo 3
            I'm actually only half joking.
Get one of the F1 cars and go on a tight 1st gear corner like the hairpin in Monaco or Complex String. If you don't lightly press the throttle around the corner the engine braking will lock up the rear wheels and cause a lot of oversteer.
Arguing with an engineer is a lot like wrestling in the mud with a pig. After a few hours, you realise that he likes it

they arnt sequential, they arnt aloud to have sequential shifts in V8 supercar racing?

No, the V-8's have to have an 'H-pattern' type shifter.

on a similar note, i'd pretty much developed an opinion that mark skaife was an arrogant dickhead and i was sick and tired of him winning races instead of all the other blokes..

..but i've just finished reading his 'diary' - the new book he has out, and my opinion of him has changed heaps.. sure, he's not a character like brocky or larry but he's gotten where he is through sheer hard work and by using his head, and you've gotta respect that.. all the power to him i say..

..however, hopefully his v8supercar dominance will lead him on to bigger and better things and let some of the other guys have a chance in the supertaxis.

edit; the book is a good read too btw.. well worth the $20. it's a good insight into the sport and skaifey himself.

Id stayed out of the thread up til now, but here I come anyway

Just on the arrogant dickhead thing. Tho I wouldnt have said it like that, what shits me is the way he relates to the fans. Youve likely all seen it, out in the paddock. For example, say Craig Lowndes (who really takes after Brock in this regard) will sign something for almost every little kiddie staring up at him with big wide eyes, hes their hero and he is very happy to give them a second of his time. Ive seen their team manager have to pull Craig away to something theyve had to attend to and Craig is like "Yer just a minute". On the other side of the coin seems to be Mark Skaife. I wont mention the whole skyline-win sega-lose hrt-win again thing (oops I did anyway), but he doesnt seem to have time for anyone. Im sure he has a lot on his plate, but they all do. An example of this was one time where a little kiddie is looking up at him like he's god or something and asks him really politely if he can sign a hat or something for him; Mark keeps walking, barely bats an eyelid and says "No I cant".

Its a bit of a rant but the point is that he doesnt seem to be like the other guys, some of the drivers you can actually talk with and theyre just another guy. MS gives off the vibe of being nobility or something.

I also doubt that he is in fact denjam, tho if he is I hope he doesnt take this too much too heart (im sure he wouldnt anyway )

*steps back, awaits the carnage sure to follow*

I suppose it depends on your personality, I'd like it if kids followed me round and worshipped me, but maybe Skaifey gets irritated by it after a while. But that's the price for being in the public eye, he has to expect people to come up to him, theyre why he's famous....

yeah, in the book it says that he's in race-mode at the track up until the flag falls on the last race.. so fans sometimes get the short straw.. and his schedule does look pretty busy.

that said, larry lowndsey russel and brocky all had plenty of time for their fans and are pretty successful too..

..i can remember being at lakeside way back when brocky was racing volvos and he had an autograph queue almost 200m long.. mrs brock was stuffing food into his mouth so he didnt have to stop signing to eat. now that's dedication, and that's why brocky is a legend.

That all said, who won the series by eleventy billion points? If I was Lowndse (sp?) I would be taking notes
I hear we're going to Ape Island to capture a giant ape.

                          Yeah.

I wish we were going to Candy Apple Island!

                          Why? What's there?

                          Apes... but they are nicer.

he is the commentator's best buddy though, and famous for the fact its impossible to wipe a smile off his face. I dont think I've ever seen that kid look cheesed at anything, maybe he's on valium or something :D

My original impression of engine braking was that it was designed to put the car in gear at the right moment, so instead of threshold braking the entire way in and having to reduce brake pedal pressure as you put it in gear to allow for the sudden effects of compression braking, you brake the entire way with compression and hold it on the verge of lockup with the help of compression. I have no knowledge or experience to back this up other than I read it on the internet, so it must be true :p

Back when Lowndes and Skaife had the same car in HRT, Lowndes kicked his arse
                              :D

Still, it feels way cooler to run down the gears, even if it isnt actually as efficient

I find if im doing 80 in my commodore, and whack it back in second and brake, I can pull up faster without breaking traction.... Also in the wet its alot better, feels like you have more control....Your not just thinking "oh shit - I'm gunna slid into the car infront of me." Thats my idea with a commo ute anyways.
