Are Corolla GTs supposed to be this slow?

Im next to a early 90s Corolla GT 'twin cam' at the lights and he looks pretty keen for a run, light goes green and we're off, he gains about half - 2/3rds a length instantly but cant pull any further till I back off at 80ish. We go again at another set of lights and its the same result except he gains a bit more at the start due to me having a shitty launch.

I thought these were pretty quick?:O Dont they have 100kw?

Oh I was driving my new daily driver, a 1983 626 with 375,000kms on it, 2nd engine, that burns more oil than petrol.

Yes street racing is bad, but it was 11pm with not a person or vehicle in sight

I've been in an '83 626, and there must've been something seriously wrong with that Corolla ...

"GT" though; they never sold such a thing here, maybe it's a base-model with a K-Mart badge stuck on, or maybe overseas not all GT's were 4A-GE powered?
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

Forg... and 83 FWD 626 was quite fast in its day.. Around a 10-10.5 sec 0-100km/h car.

The Corolla T/C wasn't that much faster.

So, it probably come down to who was a better driver at the time.

Another fact. A 61kw LAser TX3 EFI (bubble) was faster to 90 km/h than the then current Corolla T/C (88kw 16V eFi). Peak power ain't everything.

          The TX5 Turbo was about a 10.5s 0-100 car; I didn't realise this 626 was turbo.

The n/a ones were closer to a 14s 0-100! [OK, maybe I cheated & quoted the figure for the auto there ... ]

Also, the comment on the Laser - they must have brilliant gearing for a 0-90km/h dash, those things felt slow to drive in comparison to a Corolla.

Forg - There was an AE92 GT - it was a model put together towards the end of its life, based on an SX (i think it had extra colour coding and different wheels, or something like that).

Edit - actually, it was called a GTi, my bad.

Yeah I was gonna say the 626 would only be good for 14-15seconds... (But I was going by the auto)

So, you're saying that an old 636 would be close to as fast as a 200sx??? 14-15 sec??? hmm...

Just checked in one of my old motor mags... '91 mag has the mazda 626 Hatch 4ws as 16.49 400m and 8.92 0-100.

Oh... and just looked at a '92 mag, which has the corolla GTi in it. Listed times are 16.71 400m and 9.45 0-100.

                      You're getting all confuddled!

The 626 model we're talking of was the shape before the 4WS became available; it was the first FWD model. And 14-15s was the 0-100km/h time, not the quarter!

Lone, that's a good question; he said the early 90's rounded one so it's an AE92, but AFAIK GT's were all imports (no FWD 2dr's made or sold here). Do you know if they all had 4AGE's? I've got a recollection of NZ having 1.3L Corolla GT's (although I think the FX-GT's were all 4AGE?).

yer i know that they are only imports (have to of been a few years ago change of law) but unsure as to the engine specs...

damn toyota had a wide variety of models/engines around late 80/early 90

Located a site they said they fully emissionised US model 626 did 12.5 sec.

The turbo version (2L SFI Turbo) was mid 8's

I can tell you now Forg that the FWD 626 (83) was not a 14 sec car.

It was a 3 door. White, with GT Twin Cam decals on the rear lower quarter panel behind the door. And had an exhaust (actually it was probably just a tip as it sounded so farty) Only reason I 100% new he was giving it some was the sound.
AE92 I think, first of the rounded models.

Feels quicker than 0-100 in 15secs, or perhaps my SOTP metre is out :O (Ive got a GTECH arriving tomorrow so ill see then)
If you could get the motor to rev out to 6500rpm it would probably be reasonably quick. (it dies around 4500rpm)

Seems to handle ok too, despite the fact its manual steering, has shitty tyres, and stuffed bushes.(has good shocks though)

Just to tell you I have original
Motor manual Mags that prove the original Manual 626/Tx5 from 1983 pulled 10.8 second to 100km/h
I have Mag scans if you want them
The Corrolla could have been GTI which I can tell you is not much faster I have seen a XF 4.1L Auto take one with mods and the XF's only did 10 second in auto to 100km/h mark.
                              It still lost but
GTI/SX 100Kw corrollas are in the 9's but where will depend on the driver.
Like someone said Top end power is not every thing

Note: leaded TX5 /626 coupe turbo's pulled high 8's and unleaded low 9's
                              Auto 2.0L pulled 13's 100km/h
