Imagine being a ship in the crosshairs of a Russian sub armed with a Shkval... It would surely revolutionise the way maritime warfare is conducted - I mean, torpedoes would go fom being the kind of weapon you can evade, to being something it seems the enemy could almost just line up and fire (relatively speaking)!

heheh i was checking out some helicopter deployable ones, theres some nifty shit. they fire them from a chopper or ship, and they scoot along 10m above the wave crests (under the radar) then at an undisclosed distance from the target (i get the impression a good k or 2) they drop into the sea and scoot along underwater until they twat the target.

amazing and not a little scary....all GPS and computer guided, go round islands and all!!!
Turns out, far too much has been written about great men and not nearly enough about morons

Try the next generation of them - They're wire-guided and can turn as well. They are also so fast that a sub can stand-off near the coastline and fire towards a base near the beach, and make the torpedo jump out of the water to hit the target. By doing that it's too late for any anti-aircraft guns or whatever to hit them ...

Shkval hey? Never heard of those, but what was the fuel used in the British "Swordfish"? Capable of about 60-70knots by memory (going back to 688 Attack Sub days here :D)

regarding the soliton/tsunami debate... from what i recall from geography - a tsunami is essentially a collection of ripples that on the surface appear to be very little, yet underneath contain massive power, and as the depth decreases, they condense to form a bigger wave and so on. One of the great tsunami's that struck the southern coast of Shikoku was observed by fishermen over 100 kilometres offshore. furthermore, tsunamis are not necessarily a single wave, and can have aftershock-like second waves. please correct me if i'm mistaken.

i didn't read the links that have been posted as i'm about to fall out of my chair from fatigue, but i'm assuming that a soliton, due to the immense release of energy that it is created from, is a single wave of massive power due to the energy pulse that is behind it, maintaining speed and distance.

                  Ok two things

One using this an Atomic detonation beneth the ocean would cause a soliton. But as the ocean has no walls too focus the wave form energy it would spead out in all directions weakening as it enlarged and grew from the epicenter .

Two the Thresher was not a natural cause. One of the blow valves failed, water in the sub systems caused the reactor to scram and shutdown, at the time they were very deep. At such a depth you can't blow ballest as the vents would just freeze over with ice. So with no power and little momentum they angled the bow planes up to try and bring the boat up. This caused the boat to stall and start to slide back down to crush depth.

Nick, underwater atomic detonations are, in the great scheme of things, miniscule. They release but a fraction of the energy of a volcanic eruption or an eartquake. Also, generally speaking they are surface phenomena. Most of these detonations were in atolls and not very deep at all. If you get a chance watch the documentary 'Trinity and Beyond' - some fantastic footage of nuclear explosions from the 40's thru to the 60's. One clip shows a 20 MT hydrogen bomb blowing on Bikini Atoll. There are some close ups of derelict ships the navy anchored near the blast site, and these are just overwhelmed by a wave that must be 4-5 times their height. About 30-40 seconds later this wave hits the island they are filming from. The surge was impressive.
I believe the US did conduct deep sea detonations of some small devices in the early 1950's looking at their ability to destroy subs.

Dont believe what you read about the Kursk.

It did dink due to a torpedo. What they didnt tell you, is that they shot themselves with it!! Funny but true.

What these torpedo's are SUPPOSED to do is:
                      Fire from the sub
                      Go OUT of the water
                      Fly through the air
                      Go BACK into the water
                      And hit another sub.

                      What really happened:
                      Fired from the sub
                      Went out of the water
                      Went back into the water
                      Turned around
                      Shot themselves.

                      They targeted themselves! Damn computers

                      Warpspeed,
Yes. I am a mech engineer that builds and fixes the aussie subs.

Once again, don't beleive the crap that is in the media. If it is to due with the military or defence, then the info is either exagerrated or incomplete.

The military will nevah tell the whole story!

                        Nick,
If a blow valve failed, you wont get water in the sub. Just in the ballsat tanks. Even if a blow valve failed, an "emergency blow" will clear all tanks of water. There are more safety back-ups ona sub than hairs on my head!

Also, what has the depth got to do with freezing valves? The ballast system is designed to work PAST crush depth. Valves only freeze over due to a high dew point in the air. Valves havn't frozen in MANY many years.

Dont beleive what you are told. But there is always an exception. This might have happened. I dont know exactly what happened to that sub, so i cant say.
